4 wheel drive, sometimes

Need a little help guys. I got a 96 Ram with 4WD problems, I engage 4WD my light always comes on at times it stays in 4WD sometimes it feels like it slips out. I have tested the CAD motor it will move the fork full travel both ways and hold vacuum, the light comes on only when the fork is at full travel. I know nothing about transfer cases could something in it be slipping? I rebuilt my automatic transmission and made sure the transfer case was full of fluid after installing it. Up to this point I have never a problem with it. I don't use it hard only when needed for snow during winter.

Thank you for any help with this.
Floyd

I had the same non-response to some of my recent questions after several hundred views...It's a lot harder to get a response, or even a comment here than it used to be...I wish I had a better answer for you......Ben

What do you mean by "sometimes it slips out"...? Because it shouldn't "slip" out without making some ugly banging and slamming noises, unless you happen to get that perfect alignment of driveline to offer a smooth random unwarranted disengagement. So I'm guessing you're experiencing something else...

But that said, maybe this link will help provide some insight to how the entire CAD 4wd system functions. Diagnosing 4WD Engagement Problems on Dodge Ram pickups
And if you're unhappy about the responses or lack there of then there are other forums out there, but being critical of those who seemingly dont have an answer for you isnt the right move.

Does the light go out when it feels like it is slipping out, and is the slipping out accompanied by grinding or banging noises? Have a look at the fork and the motor shaft in the CAD. I've seen forks crack and shafts bend. The little plastic pads on the tips of the fork are also pretty important too, for complete engagement.

Have a look at the splines on the intermediate axle shaft where the shift collar engages it. If you usually wait until the rear wheels are spinning to shift it into 4WD, and it makes a grinding sound as it shifts, those splines may be worn to a ramp shape, which will push the collar out of engagement under load.
