2nd NV4500 explosion...HELP!

This is # 3 to go in. All I have done is grind the fuel plate and exhaust, This truck is very fast but others are faster and seem to hold up. All I want is a little warranty and some confidence. I have been stranded in kentucky 4hrs from home twice. God, there has got to be something out there.

Who is rebuilding your trannies? Or are you buying new ones? I went through a little phase where i was eating NV4500's too, turned out that the outfit rebuilding them was not using genuine New Venture parts or good timken bearings, Also to save money some rebuild shops will put in cheap syncros and not the good brass ones. As result cheap parts are not heat treated and tempered like the originals. SOmetimes the real wreck happens when mix cheap replacement hard parts with good originals one always seems to eat the other up becuase the cheaper gears are contacting the other gears a little different during operation and one gear is harder than another, Once one gear begins to lose material it goes in the oil and is ground through all the bearings. THere is a Magnet on the PTO covers but i do not know if it instantly attracts the wear particles. IT is also sometimes a good idea to get the a upgraded input shaft, I had too becuase i broke couple . And ofcourse the last thing is the fluid which i have found if not followed to the letter will definantly result in early and in some hard use cases instant failure. any how just my .2cents.

Look here; http://www.nv4500.com/index.php/cPath/3145

If you want to upgrade the inputshaft you will need the 1-1/4 which is heavyduty. std. is 1-1/8

Orrr you can upgrade to NV5600 plenty of shifting but tougher than nails. If you pull alot you will love it, around town they remind me of diggin a ditch.(lots of work) Hope this helps.

zspear. I don't know much about the tranny shop. My junk broke in Ky and my friends house was closer than mine. He is getting it done for me.I trust his good judgment though. You also said 1 1/4 input. Not 1 3/8?

Drkelly, Yes yes yes, 1-3/8 is best I found an outfit that builds input shafts 1-3/8 custom, they claims if you break it they will buy it.

http://www.haisleymachine.com/input%20shaft.htm

Std is 1-1/8 and yes there is an upgrade to 1-1/4 , However there is the utlimate 1-3/8 which is highly recomended for dodge cummins. Sorry about that My mistake,. I am about to rebuild one behind A chevy 6.5 and and i have been going over the differences between chevy and dodge versions and i somtimes get lost with the different sizes and gear ratio's. Sounds like your in good shape though and should be rolling soon I would definatly try a 1-3/8 if that holds it together better.

I was about to say that.......maybe you're confusing a GM 4500 with a dodge 4500.......

my stock input shaft was 1 1/4".....and the upgrade is to a 1 3/8" I've not heard of a 1 1/8 input on a dodge 4500.

Yea I'm sorry guys I did get a little mixed up. There is a 1-1/8 Nv4500 input shaft size but I think it is used on the small gas engines ie 350 chevy and 360 dodge gas engines. All the rebuild trannies i have looked at offer the 1-1/4 as std HD tranny for the V-10 and Cummins and the 6.5 chevy diesel i have has the 1-1/4. But for the cummins yes 1-3/8 is a great upgrade from the 1-1/4 which is std. Hope nobody but me got confused .
