2nd Head gasket in 26 hours :(

I replaced the head gasket and put everything back together, drove it for a day and at 7pm the day after i put the new gasket in I noticed alot of smoke coming out of my vent tube. I shut the truck down and checked the oil. It was very low so I checked the coolant and there was all my missing oil .

The new gasket I had put in was .20 over stock. I was hoping to lower compression a little. I had the head shaved. It was only .03 off.

I pulled the head and found that the gasket leaked between the oil passages and the coolant pasages, nothing in the cylinders. Would the thicker gasket be the cause of this? should I go back to a stock head gasket?

Thanks and sorry for the long post

Was yours a marine? or metal?

Did it blow in the same area as before?

Mine was metal, the first time it blew it went out the passenger side rear and leaked externally, the second time it went in between the coolant passeges and oil passeges and nothing came out of the motor.
Good luck with your gasket, I know Im gonna need it for mine

That's surprising considering you have studs. Hope you get it figured out!

That's no good. Was it a faulty gasket?

I guess I would stop everything and take some serious readout measurements on the block & head. Is the head warped? When the head was machined is it straight?

Good luck.

well how often do faulty headgaskets come about? the head is flat for sure...wasnt even that bad to start with. hopefully the stock size gasket will work.

did it leak from the front or rear of the block?

Ray Little was telling me that every 5.9 block he's seen has been higher in the center and lower towards the front and rear... and the heads smile in the opposite direction...

so you're probably going to be a LITTLE out on the block surface, but a .020" marine gasket and studs should fix you up fine.

did you re-torque the studs?

did you have the head checked for cracks?

True, but what Geico is saying is that the maching shop may have ruined your head....

Couldnt advanced timing be a issue for blowing a gasket I had the same thing happen to me one time when I was still at the garage.

Whats the head gasket look like? I did a gasser one time and put a slight dent in it when I was replacing the head and it leaked pretty good. With a big inline 6 they may be the culperate. I would personally put my money on the block being warped. A machinsts rule should tell you pretty quick. I have seen more than one motors head gasket not hold when swapping heads on an unmachined block.

I would have to agree with Forrest. Marine gasket and definetly new studs. I vaguely remember reading there are different studs, maybe stonger with more torque, with the higher horsepower mods being done. Can't remember for sure. I would thhink someone would chime in if I'm way off though.
