You know it is illegal to remove the converter. If someone were to crawl under there and find out you sawed it off with a sawzall and then replaced it with a piece of straight pipe and a couple of clamps, you could get in big trouble. And if you did violate this federal law, you would be eliminating an emmision control device that doesnt do anything whatsoever except increase back pressure which makes your engine work harder to produce the same amount of power therfore burning more fuel which increases exhaust produced therefor lowering your MPG and increasing EGT's which shortens engine life.

Just cut it off, most states dont do emissions inspections anyways for diesels. It will only eventually clog up and cause you more problems.

I just bought a '98 12-valve today and it seems to be a dog compared to my '93. Do y'all think the cat (still on there) might be plugged?

As long as you remove it for off road use, you are good. I know a lot of guys that have off road trucks that have taken them off.

All aftermarket exhaust systems don't come with a cat. I kinda wish they did myself. Cats are expensive though! $400-500 for a 5" cat.
