1998 Dodge Ram 2500 Gently Used 12V
My first truck was a Ford F-150 4x4 late teens, 2nd was a GMC Sierra 1500 late 20s early 30s, my 3rd truck is a real one, early 40's, I guess you can say that we are never to old to learn. My gently used 1998 Dodge RAM 2500 12V with 335000km, doesn't smoke or leak and runs very tight (like a new truck). https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...5000km-med.jpg
The seller wanted $8000.00 Cdn, after having it checked by one of my buddies I offered $7500.00 Cdn and as of 6:45 PM (thats when the dog heard something rumbling into the yard and went ballistic hehehe) I now have a beautiful black beauty in my carport (was originally pearl blue now Black). Carfax backed up the sellers story and once I ran the VIN, I saw that my 8th digit was a D, I yelled out as if I had hit the jackpot at Casino Niagara, it even surprised my wife (now she knows why). Needless to say I can't wait till the DMV opens tomorrow, I will be there sipping on a steaming mug of black coffee at 8:00 AM. Once I get my temporary permit I will take it out to work, have to show off my new toy. Now will try to get my pictures into my gallery. Bonne Nuit Serge |
i know i will be ripped a new one for this, but i don't get the whole 8th digit a D or C, does that mean its a diesel or what?

It refers to what type of engine was manufactured. Sometime in the late 80s (don't quote me on this hehehe) Cummins came out with a spectacular engine with 12 valves and quite reliable (and adjustable) pump. In 1998 Cummins stop the 12 valve production and switched to a 24 valve with a different type of pump (not as reliable etc. still learning on that one).
If your 8th digit in the VIN is a C or D you have a 12 valve, if it is a 6 you have a 24 valve (look in Genosgarage there is VIN decoder chart pretty cool to know the history of your vehicle). Just obtained my E-test and my black beauty passed with flying colors, will get it safety tomorrow, all I can see is the upper front ball joints, just wondering if ordering from USA is cheaper than through Part Source or UAP (this who I normally deal with for my car). Another thought is a scrap yard (I think I am better off with new but any input would be appreciated).
It was nice an quiet (no traffic but I did enjoy the rumble of the engine) on the "403" driving into work this morning so I did some tests with regards to seeing how long it takes to slow down from various highway speeds, have to keep in mind that there is pretty near 4 1/2 tons of raw power, I was still a bit surprised, not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I also compared RPM with speed 60 Km/hr 1250 RPM 100 Km/hr 1750 RPM 120 Km/hr 2100 RPM Have also starting to price out tires P245/75R16E, looking at good road tires, the truck is 2wd and all I need are excellent highway tires Toyo, Kumho, Goodyear?????? we just bought one for $7400 short bed! we love it! but they can cost twice what we paid! Top 5 Reason's to get a 98 12 valve according to '12valve' (move over Dave) 1 reason: Its got the almost bullet proof 180 hp mechanical inj pump, easy to turn up as well! 2.- its got the newer style dash (the same as up to 2002) 3. it may have four doors, better then the older ones! (some haven't) 4. it may be a short bed, (dont know what you look for) 5.- You'd have a truck they made only for a 1/2 year, (98-89.5) but very wanted! thats why we got 2 of them! I pasted this from a thread I came across while deciding what kind of truck and thanks to 12valve (I found my own 12 valve), he now has the gratitude of one happy frenchman, merci mille fois!!!!!!! 195000 miles, all highway, never plowed or pulled anything heavy (my Black Beauty has been enjoying the sweet life, just grazing).
Very new owner but that truck is amazing, the power on the highway from 60mph to 90mph is quite the rush for the first time (must not forget the sound now I now how some of my Harley buddies feel hehehe). I never gamble, but with the help of DTR, I made a very good gamble on something that is amazing even the most skeptical guy at work. He thought he could have gotten me a better deal through is Toronto Auction connections, after showing him the retail price of a 2wd, regular Cummins 5.9l he nearly dropped (taxes in around $50000 Cdn) so a gently used was quite interesting. Long story short, after obtaining my trip permit this morning I drove in to work and made plans to arrange for my etest when the doubting thomas (with good reason for he has seen his share of horror stories) popped out of his office to come take a look. I fired it up for him after waiting the appropriate time (my first time starting the truck cold was this morning with my eager wife by my side, after four unsuccessful attempts and a few anger glares from my now skeptical wife, I saw the wait to start light, and like I said "waiting the appropriate time" the truck starting purring like a lion, too embarrassed to share this at work hehehehe) again the gently rumble of the giant drew stares to the exhaust which was clean. We popped the hood and he poked around, look at the VIN and said "you got a good deal". Thanks every one for letting me share all this "Cummins exhuberance". "Vive DTR.com libre" Serge |
Have been doing a lot of searching in the forums regarding improving fuel consumption and do not come across much info regarding the 12 valve version.
I am assuming (and we all know what often happens) that this engine is as good on fuel as my buddy's dad is. Will find out tomorrow, the low fuel light went on as I was pulling into home. Log of kilometers and top up the fuel tank (hard not to say Gas!!!!! hehehehe) and hopefully find out in about another 1000km or more. Called another good friend up to tell him about my truck and heard a good story. His dad has a 93 12 valve and as of last year, bought himself a Ford diesel for the winter (his mileage is not so good in the winter anymore). https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/..._Truck-med.jpg My wife took this picture sideways because she didn't want to back up any further and was only way to get such a big truck in the frame. congrats on the 98 12 valve, i purchased one here in the UK 4 weeks ago, it's a 98 Club Cab Long Bed auto with a mere 44,000 miles

Thanks guys nothing wrong with a shiny Dodge Ram 2500 12valve. As I was driving in to work I realized that I was sitting up straighter (my wife always corrects my posture), I guess the 12valve`s vibes got to me sub-consciously hehehe.

That's a nice little truck there, you don't find too many regular cab 12 valve 98's like that! Of course, mine will be considered a 12 valve here within a week anyway, definetly the best of both worlds with the 12v and newer dash!
