1996 mileage

I have 2 Dodge diesels both with the same gears it seems and the 5 speed standard gets 18 to 19 mpg and the auto gets 11 to 12 both in non-pulling situations and hilly terrain in Hawaii. Is this what I should expect?

Re:1996 mileage

Over the last 890 gallons through my 5 speed, average 18.92 MPG, can't say about the auto. Maybe no TC lockup?

Re:1996 mileage

I have a 96 also but I get mileage that avg around 20 empty and 16 to 17 towing here in the WV mountains.

I am not sure why your mileage is so low. Has it got a plugged cat on it perhaps?

Re:1996 mileage

I've got a manual shift and gets around 19. I used to have a 95 2wd w/auto that got around 20 or so, sometimes better sometimes less, depending on how fast I drove it.

Re:1996 mileage

11 to 12 mpg seems kind of low to me.
With the stock tires and 3:55 gearing, I was getting about 19 to 20 mpg. I have since put on 33" tires and adjusted for the larger tires, I still get around 19 mpg around town.
Freeway driving has gone up with the bigger tires and now I average about 23 mpg on the highway.

Have you done the standard stuff?
1) Fuel Filter,
2) Valve Adjust,
3) Clean Air Filter,
etc...

Also, check the timing, and make sure the exhaust is free from restrictions.

Rich

Re:1996 mileage

My 97 auto gets 17 in town and 20 on the highway at speeds of 70. If I hammer it to 90 mph I get only 17 mpg.

Re:1996 mileage

94, 2500, 4x4, auto, 3.55, 219,000 miles I get average 20mpg driving 34 miles to work every day one way. If on a road trip I get 22mpg 24mpg if I keep it at 65mph. Haven't towed anything heavy enough to make a change in the mileage.

Re:1996 mileage

What kind of effect would altitude have on MPG?

I figured that it was on the round part of the cam, not being pushed on by the lobe of the cam. most of the valves where a little on the tight side.

Re:1996 mileage

I would do it that way if I could get to the flywheel without taking the tranny out. : I haven't even looked to see if there's enough room to put a socket on the harmonic balancer or anything. I was just waiting for that tool because it's about the only other way I know of.

Re:1996 mileage

he he he! Thats what I meant. So yes, I just put a socket on one of the small bolts that is on the harmonic balancer. It meant a lot of lying on the ground, turning it a little, then getting up to see if the rocker arm was loose. And you dont have to order that "Extra special" Flywheel turning tool.
Just my .02c
