For the past week my truck has had this issue with going into overdrive and sometimes when in od (cruising at like 55mph) it will pop out of od and hits my max rpm (stock govenor) and keeps me at like 45-50 but the trans temp light will pop on sometimes (especially going up hills when this happens). But tonight It doesnt seem to want to go into od at all.... I took back roads home to keep the rpms down so I dont fry the trans.... i tried to adjust the shift point cable but every time I push the button and move the cable it still seems loose. Not sure if that even has anything to do with od. I'm not good with autos (or trans in general) so I'm lost at what to do....

Have you checked the ATF fluid level?

atf is fine filled and doesnt smell burnt

just rechecked flund and now it's a little dirty when i wipe it away. I'll change it and see where that gets me
