The the Getrag transmission has a big "GETRAG" cast into the side of the case.

The Getrag will also have a bolt on driveshaft yolk. The NV-4500 will have a slip yoke.

Or post a picture of what you got and I could tell quickly.

Thank you Mr. Oliver. I believe you helped me last time. Truck been sitting all winter due to wonderful conditions. Trying to get it mobile again for spring/summer. I will look when i get home. Thank you. Is it possible to have the nv4500 in 93? Or was that not even a thing until later?

Glad too help out another 1st gennner.

If it is a gasser you could get a NV-4500 from the factory in a '93.

If it is a diesel and you have a NV-4500 under there someone swapped it in over the years.
The Dodge Cummins trucks didn't get the NV-4500 until '94.

it is a diesel. So i will look just to verify for what thats worth. Apparently the getrags are tough to get parts for my my tranny shop to rebuild it. Even finding a donor for parts or a good one to swap into has been tough.

At this point searching for a transmission when your not even 100% sure what you have sounds like less than ideal.

Found out what you have, then spend time searching for what you need.

Also what seems to be your issue?
2wd or 4x4 truck?

Let me know what you are up against, I might be able to help better...I might even have what you need in my shop.

i know. Haha. Never really even had to mess with the truck in the year that ive had it. This first major break. Replaced power steering pump which was neat. Different than the old fords im use to for sure.

I have nothing but 4th gear. Ive heard input shaft. Ive heard gears. My plan was just to take to tranny shop and let them fix it as i know nothing about trannys. But they say depending on whats broke, they may not be able to get parts for it. It started grinding/scratching/howling one day. Next day it popped and that was it.

and its 2wd. D250. Random but i also have a weak leaf spring. Sags to passenger side i believe. Appears you gotta pull fuel tank to get one of the shackle bolts out.

Yes I pull the fuel tank to get to the front drivers side leaf spring bolts when swapping springs.

I just rebuilt my Getrag. There are a decent supply of most parts, some have to be gotten used like 1-2 syncro. But depending on what all is broke, may be simplier to jyst do a swap. A decent rebuilt kit is about 150.00. If you have a press, that makes it easy. If you have the manual and reasonable skills, its not bad at all. Just get the preload shimmed correctly.

I doubt you have to pull the fuel tank to change the passenger spring

If its the driver side, you can support the tank while you undo the aft strap and loosen the forward, and wedge it away from the frame for some room. Look at your spring hanger carefully.... often rusted out.

I had broken leafs, rusted-thru hangers, and a tired Dana 70 with shot brakes. I swapped in full 2ndgen stuff and Dana 80.

EDIT: I like the Getrag. Just because your shop can't find parts quickly isn't cause to abandon it. Based on my buddies' NV4500 failures, its not a 'bulletproof' trans, and some HD parts once available (bling alloy, cryo, etc) are gone. Between the Advance Adapters kit, and possible driveshaft length changes, it really cranks up the cost for a minor improvement.
