12v. engine and drivetrain question
Hey guys,
I'm looking at a 1996 4x4 5sp, and every time I shift and hit the go pedal, truck makes a funny clunking noise combined with a bit of a lurch (not from a crappy shift lol), doesn't sound like ujoints either. Also, I noticed the valve cover gasket was juicing out a bit of oil. Is that a tough fix? Thanks for the help, its much appreciated! Ian |
carrier bearing? pretty easy to tell....middle of the driveshaft.
Valve cover gaskets? easy. |
mint, thanks 1320. Is the carrier bearing an easy fix too? I forgot to mention that it sounded like it was coming from the front...almost like the motor was bouncing around (as a vague illustration)

The carrier bearing......sorta.....could be a PITA too....takes a press most of the time. I do know that my 98 "is special" and had to go to the dealer... but I think you ll find it at napa etc.....then pull the driveshaft and take it to a driveline place(20$ or so).....or just take it to the driveline place but they might get ya for some extra $$$.

maybe a broken front axle shaft flopping and bind up up front, mine makes that sound.....
