12v or 24v? Which is better?
I could really use some insight from someone who has been around cummins diesels for a while.
I am on the verge of buying a cummins diesel but have a few unknown questions
What is a better motor, the 12v or the 24v? I know the 12v's have more support because they have been around longer, but the 24v feel much stronger and sound cooler. Is there an advantage to purchasing one over the other. Which is more reliable? which has better potential? How about fuel mileage? Which would be the more wise decision?
I really appreciate the help. I really want to buy a cummins, just want to make sure i am making the best decision. Thanks!

Take a look here, my friend. It's been said; some would kill to have this in their driveway.

You have started a thread that has more opinions than the Confederates succeeding the union. Bound to get locked out. Better than transmissions wars, oil wars, can create a mess A better thread would be which are better, blonde's or brunettes. You cannot win this one. Bet you knew that though

I think both are kinda weak stock. I also think both run real good with a few mods. The 01 HO that was bought new run decent but it replaced a 88 ford 7.3 that wouldn't get out of its own way with a trailer. The 12 valve seems more dependable but alot including me have had real good luck with the 24v. It's getting harder to find a 12v with decent miles on it too. I wouldn't be afraid of either one. Good Luck,Gary

the 12v is cheaper to mod...you can get some solid hp just by grinding the plate and getting the 3k Gov. spring kit...couple hundred bucks...24v you have to buy a box...which is around $700 (?) I broke down and got a 24v (picking it up this saturday) They're both pretty much indestructable except for the lift pump in the 24v

Yup, these threads can go on and on.....do a search, there has been way more than enough discussion on this! FWIW, you can get a 98 quadcab 12v........they are out there and very desirable! 12v's are only slightly cheaper to bomb but 24v's are definitely easier....just plug in a Comp and go! With a #100 plate (custom ground), 3000 GSK, and advanced timing, you would be pushing it to match the fueling level and power gains of a Comp on 5x5 but it would be close! I like 12v's and 24v's....they both have their strong and weak points.....I have bombed one of each and still can't decide!!

The 98 12 valve is the best of both. Well good stuff from both anyways, thats why they are "the ones". Unfortuantely they are ussually very hard to get. I took three planes, and one rental car to get to mine...(took 24hrs) then drove it home.
They are both greath set ups, may depend alittle on how far you want to go with it.

There has been many a thread askin this question
My theory is, u like mechanical stuff? or electonic goodies? Mechanical, go 12V, electronic, go 24 V... either ways it seems to me u cannot go wrong..
Best of luck

I have a 99 and just recently, a 96. I love them both. If you want to have huge HP I think the 24v is better, because you can put a fueling box on it that you can turn down when you want to tow, to keep the smoke and EGTs down. The 12v isn't as easy to back off once you have turned it up. I think the 12v has more potential to give you really big HP, you just can't turn it down easily.
The 96 is quieter than the 99, but then the 96 is also stock, with a muffler, for now.
I can't decide. I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

12 valve would be my choice simply cause its mechanical and the pump is bulletproof...only drawback is u have to set the timing manually....the only thing i like in 24 valves over 12 is the idle/clatter
