Mine did the same thing. Sounds like your prob getting air in the fuel line from a leak somewere. I found it by pressurizing the fuel system thru the filler neck with about 10psi. You will see bubbles/fuel from the leaking area. I ended up replacing the fuel lines from tank to pump with marine grade rubber lines. 3/8 and 5/16 if i remember correctly.

I've found just replacing the short hoses behind the engine and at the tank a waste of time if you plan on keeping the truck for long.
The stock metal lines fail too. Better to abandon them, replace with quality marine diesel rated hose from engine to tank and be done with problems for good.
Job is easier than messing around behind the engine too.

Some counter guys at the autoparts stores mistakenly think all hose is compatible with diesel.
They seem to think gasser fuel injection hose is good for everything because of the high pressure rating.
Far from the truth, diesel is incompatible with many more materials than gasoline.
If they say yes too fast I'd question them. They most likely have it or can have it the next day though.
My Napa guys know exactly which hose to use but I'm in an agricultural area where there is a lot more demand.

I had a 97 with similar problems and after removing and replacing the heater ,hoses and OF/V it turned out to be the filter drain would let air in but no fuel leak replaced the orings and that was it

Question on removing to fuel heater?
When removing the fuel heater and I remove the stud that holds the heater in place, will the bolt that holds the pre screen screw into the same threads the stud came from?

What I trying to say is We don't need a special bolt or spacer from cummins.

The cummins parts guy told em they sell a lot of heaters. cost a couple hundred bucks.

Thanks , Tom

It eventually melts it.
By using marine grade diesel hose you're assured that you won't be replacing the hose ever again.
One of those deals where you have to ask yourself how much your time is worth vs. the price of the hose when you have to do the job more than once.

You also have to ask how much it's worth if a hose fails on you 700 miles from home on Saturday night when it's 10° below zero.
I prefer reliability over cheap personally.

Glad I found this thread, I've got the same issues as some of you folks here too. cold hard starting after its sat a bit, smokes a ton and the smell of the smoke is acrid and burns your eyes. warm outside no prob but I still need to give it some petal pressure to start it.

I replaced all my fuel lines, retained the metal though. I'm thinking perhaps my fuel lines melted as the parts guy gave me fuel line that didn't cost anywhere near 18 bucks/foot even though I asked for marine diesel hose.

I'll delete the heater and run all new marine lines, change the FF.

question:

how much line to order?
could bad injecter cause this?

I want to change out my injectors, they've got 250k on them and never been pulled.

More like 12-14 feet depending on what cab configuration you have.
It's an economical use of your time to crawl under and measure since you need both the return and supply hose.
