12 valve fed ex truck?

ok boys, iv got the chance to buy a complete 12 valve CTD out of a fed ex truck, the guy has several of them and says i can hear them run and have my pick of the litter, they are supposed to have the better injection pump instead the the rotory pump like my 92 has and are equipped with allison automatics, so my question is what is different from the fed ex truck motors to the ones that are in the dodge pick ups? are the basically a good motor with a crap injection pump and crap turbo or are they just as good as whats in our trucks? please help me out.......

thanks!

The engine should be fine. The transmission would be the issue. The Allison would not have overdrive.

Should be a p7100 pump, the rest should be almost identical to your current engine.

I would stick with the 5 speed, use the block adapter back from your current engine, it will bolt up the same.

i know it's a little late, however- i recently had the chance to buy 4 of these motors for 2 grand, same thing- out of a ups truck. after looking closer and investigating these, i found out they are not a 6bt motor. i was told by a few cummins dealers that they are not the 6bt motor and parts between the 2 motors are not interchangable. they are not made by cummins, they are made by i believe it was onan. they have a lot less horsepower and torque that a 6bt. basically after all was said and done it was decided that they were not such a great deal and would be a real problem to work with .

well thats not good news but thankfully your not too late the guy who has them is being a real pain to get a hold of to look at the motors.......is there anything to look to at specifically that they are the same motors you had a chance to by? i figure there still worth looking at, but if they arent a cummins then shouldnt it be pretty easy to see? thanks for the help so far....

There should be the build tag on the timing cover.

If they aren't 6BTs, then I would think no sale, but they put 6BTs in many......

Cant remember if it actually says 6BT, but there will be a CPL number and an engine serial number that you could go to Cummins with.

ok i just returned from looking at the motors and they are definitely a 12v CTD with the p7100 pump....but there are some major differences, the oil pan is a front sump design, the exhaust manifold and turbo is different as well, thats all i could notice without really examining it.....another downfall is the high mileage on these motors out of the six motors two were under 200k and were both sold already....next to that is 348k then 414k and a few in between.......the guy is asking $1500 a piece, although they do fire right up and run but i think thats way to much......i could trade a 454 chevy motor i have with 87 thousand original miles straight up for one....im not thinking its a good deal....what do you think?

Depends on how bad you need one. 454 prices have dumped around here, you would be lucky to get 5-700 for that.

I think I would pass unless you could live with the front sump though, not sure what all is required to change it, and real Dodge spec 6bts aren't much more if any.

If the engine came out of a car, it is 1974 or older, just what year 454 are we talking about here?

Early 454s are still bringing big bucks.

its out of a 71' monte carlo ss, i ran the numbers did my hours of research and came back with its a 365 horse motor, which sucks because they also offered a 425 horse motor that year, it was a 454 TH400 car, with around 87k miles a bought off of a 60 some year old women whos husband had owned the car partially dismantled it and was going to repaint it and sadly died of a heart attack before he finished it, this was in 2000 and the car sit untouched for 8 years when i forked out 2500 bucks and hauled her home.....should have fixed it up myself but im not crazy about monte's holden out for a chevelle so i yanked the motor and sold the car

DOH! Talk about a RARE car........

Though they never offered the 425 Hp engine in the Monte SS, that engine is worth WAY more than the 5.9.

How much for the car and the engine? LOL, I would trade you my 69 Chevelle factory 350/300 Hp/4 speed/12 bolt all black car for it if you like Chevelles, plus your choice of any of the 5 or 6 454's I have laying around.

In any instance, that engine should bring 2500 by itself, minimum.
