In stock form, a 24 Valve would probably have more power. But they have problems with the VP44. If they don't have an upgraded lift pump, then they more than likely will need a new Injection pump in the future. Also, if you plan on turning up the power, you have to use programmers to do it, and there is a whole lot of electronics involved...
With a 12 Valve, they are all mechanical, and the P7100 can flow all the fuel you want it to. My brothers '97 made 716rwhp with a single turbo, on fuel only, and it is his daily driver. You can get a whole lot more power of these things just by moving a plate (with a P Pump) or turning a screw (with a VE).
My vote goes for a 12 Valve. All the power you will ever need, and with no electronics, it is a very, very, simple engine.

I have owned all three generations. The 12 valve with the p7100 is my favourite. You can put a fuel plate in it, gov springs, etc, have loads of power and still get great fuel economy. My 24 valve in my 04.5, driving it like grandma, the best I have got is 20 mpg. Then you have to deal with all the electronics as 1st gen said. My vote goes goes to 12 valve, either first or second gen, mind you more can be done to get easy hp from the p-pumps.

12v. i got my first one last october. very easy to work on! no electronics, and with a few simple upgrades you can put out 400hp.
compare it to a 24v open the hood and check out all the wires! sure they have more power and it takes a chip to get more out of it but something is going to give sooner or later.
i like knowing how i have my truck adjusted knowing what everything does being able to do most tweaks myself. dont let a computer do it for you
just my .02
thanks david
