I'm looking for opinions on the safety on this setup. Just because it looks unorthodox doesn't mean it's unsafe so please excuse the appearance. The trailer is a 21' cuddy boat, I'd imagine ~8k lbs. Please include a quick statement on your opinion.

P.S This is not my setup but a friends where I'm trying to backup my position from people who are smarter then me

That's pretty rough. Would like to have the break-away cable attached to the truck rather than extension number 2, at least.

Then again those bicycle lock cables are probably overkill....

Safety chains not attached to the tow vehicle frame, break-a-way cable not attatched to the tow vehicle frame, use of ratchet straps, appears to be g43 chain(should at least be g70), Chain conection point at the outer edge should be at the bottom as to not strain the small amount of weld on the chain link. Not much different than the setup of the older tow trucks however, I would not use this setup on the road due to safety and liability, off road use only.
And it just looks plain hilljack.....

All else aside that looks to be surge brake controller on the trailer and only wire for the lights so probably a boat trailer. Without a solid/rigid connection the trailer brakes might not work properly.

In your buddies defense (because it sounds like he's going to need it), there are similar type arrangements for receiver extensions used with in-bed campers in order to reach out far enough for towing. That said, lots of people dont like to use those either.....

But this disaster in the picture is either a joke or he's truly not understanding the leverages and forces at play here.
