New Truck needs

Hi All
I currently have a 2007 3500. Pull about 13-14k with it in the summer. Been very happy with it. Been reading up on the newer air assisted rear suspensions in the Rams and wondering if I should opt for the 2500. It seems like I would have a better ride when empty, but still be able to 'pump it up' with the air when needed. Or is 13-14k a bit much for a 2500 and the 3500 still better for my needs? Opinions anybody?

I think it depends on how you tow, gooseneck, 5th wheel or tag. Is your 3500 a single wheel or have duels? Is your load subject to heavy winds? And mostly it comes down to personal preference, If you have the SRW, I don't think there is much difference in ride between 2500 and 3500 when empty but with DRW, you feel everything but the DRW help a lot to keep road wander down when the wind comes up on taller loads.

Sorry, short on details there. SRW, 13' tall trailer. So the 2500 and 3500 ride about the same when empty?

That has been my experience, unless the 3500 was a DRW. Personaly, I would go with the 3500, SRW and use a WD hitch to help with the squat and wind sway.

I wonder though if the reason for the newer air assisted suspension is to be able to run softer springs and use the air to add the capacity that was formerly always there?

In other words, did the towing capacity take a big jump with the addition of the air system, or did it stay relatively the same.

If it did, then you might get a much better ride.

The tow capacity stayed the same. It was done for ride comfort on the factory system. You may get a better ride however, imo, I get a truck to work not ride nice..

I've seen some posts where the 2500 has problems towing with the coil springs, I think you need leafs for stability. I would really research it before buying.

That's why I'm asking the questions. Part of my research....
My main interest is towing stability/ capability. If I can get unloaded ride comfort as well, that would be a bonus.

Funny you should mention that, the first thing I thought of when I heard they were going back to coils was I hope one of the geniuses test towed with a 60-72 Chevy truck before agreeing to it.

Some of us still have clenched rears after all these years just remembering...........

I would hope they learned a thing or two over the decades.
