12,000lbs./Pintle hook Trailer

Getting a Pintle hook trailer soon. Will be towing About 12,000lbs (trailer and load). Have a Class IV receiver now. Most likely will order a Class V soon BUT, before I do this is there a better set up.

Do they sell a set up that replaces the bumper and the receiver and combines them for greater capacity?

Before any one suggest GN. I am working on that $$$$$ this trailer price is very good.

ranchhand sells a bumper that replaces the receiver but i think you have to bolt on a receiver to it and then you load rating goes back down. i have seen MANY stock receivers with that much weight on them. a class V would be a great idea, but imho i think you should be ok for now.

Put 2 3/4 inch bolts through the reciever and bumper in the existing holes and call it good.

BMH95, That is some thing I looked into. Mine is not set up like yours and would take some fabrication to make this work.

I've got a Putnam class V receiver and a 7 ton pintle hitch. All my trailers are pintle hitch except for my camper. I've towed my dump trailer loaded truck & trailer 18,6000, works great!

Raf,

I have an extra 2 5/16 adjustable pintle combo hitch for sale. I ordered one of them for $150. I would sell for less as I don't need two anymore.

I tow a pintle trailer every day. I had a local welding shop make me a custom hitch for mine. Made from 1" flat steel. Welded it to the frame, it's stronger than the truck. You might be able to find something similar.

Yeah, I looked at my hitch bumper set up today. I guess that simple drop in bolt idea isn't going to work on my truck either. There are three large holes, where I was told there would be small holes, that allow you to mount 3 ***** direct to the top of the hitch. It's possible I missunderstood the posts on a different forum, or that the factory installed tow package uses a different bumper than we have. OR, there is a plate that you can get from the dealer, as part of the fabled "kit", that allows you to bolt the bumper to the hitch. Sorry about the confusion.

timberman, Do you have any pictures of your set up. I have a guy that can fab up what ever I need. If I go this route it would have to hold more than the Class V hitch ($200.00) vs. something else costing more.
