Help
I have a 2001 dodge ram 2500 with Cummings disel. We put a new starter in and went about 5 miles and the truck just shut off. No black smoke no nothing. We towed it home. Bought a code reader and it said no connection with the ecm. Code 1688 and 1689. It has a brand new full pump and the other pump. We can not get it to start. If anyone has any helpful hints please share.

It's my pot and I'll stir it if I want to. If you're not careful, I'll stir your's as well!
Have a read of the previous thread "electrical melt down, stranded" and check if you have the same problem.

I am not very familiar with your model, so am taking a stab in the dark.
Presume that the starter works and that it cranks over at a decent speed. Have you tried cracking open a nut on a convenient fuel line and see if any fuel comes out while you crank it? By fuel line I am talking about one of the injector pipes from the pump to the injectors.

1688/1689 is no communication between the ecm and the injection pump control module.
First thing, being it has a new pump, is check the electrical connector at the back of the pump. (The one with the slide lock) if that was installed improperly, and the slide lock was not fully engaged, it probably came loose. The other scenario is that the pump module was not replaced when the pump was rebuilt, and has decided to fail.

To properly diagnose, follow this guide.

I am not affiliated with them, but they have a reputation for well built pumps.

If it will crank over but if the headlights are not working check your body ground but it does sound like the VP., could you have damaged the wires at the VP.
