Angry Tire pressure sensor failure

Left Front tire pressure sensor is all over the place, sometimes zero, sometimes 254. Its not the receiving unit, the monitor light doesn't flash. I ordered a new sensor from RockAuto, but need to take it in to the tire place to get the tire removed from the rim to get the sensor replaced.

Anybody have a similar problem? Only about 45K miles on it

Thx

Mike in Tucson

My left front sensor is not sending any information to the TPMS on an intermittent basis. However, it either sends the correct-ish pressure or nothing. Truck has 18K miles.

Watching replies...

Seems like those should both be replaceable under warranty (unless you have aftermarket wheels I guess). Haven't checked, but TPMS is part of the drivetrain, right?

Yes, but taking the truck into the dealership (25 miles each way), then wasting half of a day waiting on it seems a bit much for a friggin sensor.

I'm waiting on something a bit more major to happen that would make all the effort worth it.

Yeah, know how you feel. My dealer (the one I trust the most anyway) is 40 miles away.

why do we need the tpm's ?? i sure don't. my new car has them, but i don't pay attention to the little light when it comes on. but then i check my tire pressure at least once a week, just like the oil change light, i change my oil when I decide, not when the light comes on...........
the best thing to do is to remove the sensors and replace with regular valve stems, a lot cheaper .............a set of 4 tpm sensors will cost over 125.00

No TPMS on my SRW 3500 Laramie either. Wouldn't mind having it if I could manually set the pressure range. TPMS helped a couple times with slow leaks on the wife's GC with crappy OEM nail catching tires.

This TPMS thing seems hit and miss. I check mine on the truck enough due to towing with it so I can't say I miss it. I am going to mount a system on both of my big trailers using sensors with both pressure and temp. I lost an axle last year on my hauler. It was the rear. Somehow the bearing failed. It would have shown up with a temp sensor before it failed beyond repair. Tire still held air but the wheel was so hot you couldn't touch it.

We do have it on the Suburban. It actually works pretty good. The yo yos at the tire shop had the pressures all messed up in the new tires. 49, 44, 39 and 41 lbs. Max was supposed to be 44. Never would have known as it didn't vibrate or pull to one side or the other. Equaled them out at 40 across the board when I got home.
