Just bought a 2017, with no fuel cap..WTH?

So I just replaced my 2006 with a 2017 and it appears they don't come with a fuel cap. Ok, I get that with emissions etc it doesn't need one, but it appears that there's plenty of opportunity for dust/road grime/etc to accumulate and then get forced into the tank when you put the nozzle in.

Is everyone putting on a cap on anyway, and if so which do you recommend? I see there's a mopar one 82214609. Does this fit the 17's?

Thanks all and Happy New Year,
fatpete

Here you go. I think you may want to get both the DEF cap and diesel fuel cap

Still have the shipping cap on mine. The large gasket on the fuel door is supposed to keep crap out, but I dont see it being as effective as a regular cap.

I to use the plastic red cap the truck came with. If you drive gravel roads I wouldn't go without a cap.

This might be of interest to you as well: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ti-gel-326967/

I guess the second flapper is why you have to push the diesel fuel pump nozzle all the way in, or it just shuts off when re-fueling.

buddy bought a "work" truck with 30k on it.

OH MY, the inside of the gas cap area was FILTHY. it looked like they had been mixing concrete in there.

and of course, they had lost the red cap.

This is what I bought as a fuel cap.

Oatey 1-1/2 in. Gripper Plastic Mechanical Test Plug-33400 - The Home Depot

You can get it at Home Depot for less then $3.50. Works great keeping everything all neat and clean! Fits snug with no modifications.

do you need to drill a small hole in it for ventilation, otherwise as fuel is being used you would create a vacuum??

Haven't had to drill a hole. I suspect the overflow hose takes care of any vacuum issues. It is very similar to the Geno's Garage $13.00 cap but without a leash.

I suppose you could add one to the Home Depot one for cheap if wanted. I just put it on the side rails when I fill and haven't forgotten it yet, but for $3.50 it wouldn't be terrible if I did. LOL.

I've been running the Home Depot one now for about a year and half and 25-30 thousand miles with nary an hiccup!
