MPG & exhaust brake observation

Made a 300 mile round trip drive on 2-lane black top 45-70 mph over several 8,000-9,000' passes. Used the auto EB the entire time on the way out, used full EB on the way back only on steep descents, no EB otherwise. MPG difference was amazing: 18.5 MPG running with the auto EB on, 22 MPG with EB off (full only when really needed). No wind to speak of. Anyone else notice the same?

It makes sense to me, seeing as you were freewheeling a decent bit.
I like the extra braking (225 BHP) at the expense of a little fuel savings loss.

I'm so paranoid about the clogged turbo that I just turn the EB on at start and leave it on all the time

The times when you get the BEST fuel economy is when you can just drift , no accelerator pedal. You are almost covering ground for free. When you have the EB on , you are either braking or accelerating no drifting. So that is one sure way of losing fuel economy . Sometime I over use the EB ( it does sound kinda cool ) then I have to use fuel to regain my momentum .
I generally use the EB on sections of road where I will save my brake shoes.

Just my two cents . ; )

I've run very low on fuel a number of times towing my 5ver and there aren't a lot of places to get fuel up here, not everyone carries diesel. What I do now is carry 2 5gallon cans of diesel but if I start to run low because of head winds I turn off the cruise and Exhaust brake and drive very gently, it does make a difference.

Actually you can just coast with the exhaust brake on if you just slightly press on the throttle. I do this all the time to coast and not actuate the exhaust brake. If your truck will show your instant fuel economy you can see that this is the case by watching it. It will be at max 99 mpg while doing this. Press it too much and it will decrease.

my truck with the EB in auto it doesn't do anything unless I press the brake pedal or the truck speeds up a bit going downhill with the cruise on. I wouldn't think it would make a difference in mileage having it on or off. i will have to pay closer attention from now on. But I haven't done to much driving on any long grades.

I find if I'm towing heavy I speed up too much going down hill and there is no limit to speed if there is no speed restriction, so you end up using the service brakes, it's better to just turn off the exhaust brake and cruise and coast if you need to save fuel.
