out of park alarm

OK, apparently there is an "out of park" alarm that was brought about by a recall and it got me today. By the way it is a 2004 Ram 3500 with the 5.9 HO and auto trans.

I've only had the truck a couple of weeks but I have started it and gotten out with it running a number of times, no issues. Today I backed up to a tow rope to pull out a bush - put it in park and opened the door - horn started honking. Shut it off and it stopped. Tried again - same thing. I also had it in 4 lo at the time so I thought that maybe that was a problem. Put it back in 2WD and the same thing again. Then I noticed that the "P" wasn't showing the lit-up box around it so it was detecting that it wasn't in park. I played with the shifter and got it to register "P" and then I could open the door with it running. It worked good. Backed it into the garage and it did it again. The "P" wouldn't light up and I had to play with it to get it to show.

Anybody have this happen before?

My 06 does it often. I thought it had to do with the aftermarket transmission.

The shift linkage is adjustable. When mine was rebuilt the linkage was off and sometimes she wouldn't start because although it was in park, the sensor wasn't registering it in park (Not lit up).

The thing I have noticed with all this fly by wire stuff is sometimes its not instant. Slow down some and see if that doesn't help. My old 74 Dodge and 95 Dodge I get in and out and hit reverse and throw it in park and half way out the door when hooking to trailers or doing other things and my 2005 simply doesn't like those fast speeds. Take a breath and slow down your shifter movement and give it a second to lock in to P before you go out the door. Its a pain and I hate it but that seems to cure my honk issue. I am simply faster then the truck is.............
