I know air filters have been discussed a lot but I couldn't fine any info on the search bar. Definitely operator error. I've read of how aftermarket high-flow filters don't filter enough debris and are, or could, be bad for your engine, but they still seem to sell like hotcakes. So what's the deal? Are they really that bad? Will the stock OEM filter work just as well for minor performance with no more than a programmer upgrade? Thanks for any info.

ADVERTIZING dollars work well and people do not read the fine print on them. I am running 60 HP over stock at the rear wheels with the factory (Cummins) air filter been this way for 4 years with no issues. I change the filter when required by the service meter or after a year of use.

x2 jim w. hundreds of test's, warnings from cummins and Chrysler and still they believe a snake oil add over proven test data. compare your 08 stock to a afe stage II. the stock has the most advanced straightening vane in the tube I have ever seen, it along with the silencer ring reduce side shear in the compressor side of the turbo raising turbo efficiency. the afe is a open tube. the stock has insulation to keep the air cool by the exhaust manifold, the afe none. the stock box keeps hot expanded air out the afe does not. the stock filter shape helps from causing swirling action , the afe produces enough to increase side shear and even interfere with the ait sensor. the stock filter has about 5 to 10 times the surface area of the afe. dirt loading filter life, filtering and several other things are far superior to the afe. go to one of the test and look at the math for a stock 08 filter compared to a K&N, engine life is directly proportion to dirt intake. cummins has a movie clip taken in the 1940's that is starting to now recirculate that does a wonderful job explaining this. now back to the math, the K&N passes 40 times more dirt than your stock filter. I found a test that showed the K&N better than I knew it was, when I did the math it shows for every mile you drive with a K&N you decrease overall engine life by seven miles. in reality it is more like the 40 times as much wear. we keep a new K&N and a collapsed one in our shop for people to look at, hold the new one up to the light and it is like looking through a sieve. one last thing the filter media has all size holes in it, the larger holes has less restriction therefore more air flow. as the larger holes fill up the air passes through smaller and smaller holes. if you change filter before the filter minder tells you to you are throwing a 2x better filter away than the new one you are replacing it with.

I have been using the Amsoil dry cleanable filter for about 100k miles and very happy with no post filter dust. BUT.... It is showing signs of wear and overall need of replacing. I think I might go back to stock paper (4" pleated one) but I am wondering what the average mileage change interval everyone is using?

I get between a 1 year and a 1-1/2 before needing to replace. This is about 18,000 miles. What I do watch is the filter minder on the air box when this shows you that the filter needs to be changed out that is when I change mine. I keep a spare filters on hand in my cabinet fuel, oil and air for use as needed.
I also check monthly in the air box to insure that the filter has not been damage by snow or water. Check if the filter pleats have been damage and replace if they have been.

with your 08 you will get about 50,000 per change on a stock filter

After some more research on here it looks like there really is nothing better than the 4" stock paper filter for flow volume and filtration. At least for a stock air box.

Check frequently if you go off-road a lot, especially in dusty conditions. I've had to replace mine in as few as 3,000 miles in these conditions.

Mine was jet black and covered in soot I guess at 16K. The filterminder had not moved so I guess I changed it out prematurely.
Nearly 100% street use.

On my 2013 2500 I found out that the linkage under the filter had separated and that's why I was getting the change air filter each time I stepped on the gas hard.
