Replacement turbo suggestions

Today my truck started making a horrible grinding whine noise, mainly in nuterl, but when in load is seems to go away.
I replaced the belt tensioner and water pump thinking it was that, but it was still there. Pulling the intake I noticed play in the turbo shaft, and thinking about it now, I've seen white smoke at startup some times.
What are your suggestions for a turbo replacement?
i did read they can have 0.020 of shaft play, I have more than that.
I see "rebuild" kits on amazon, are those worth a ****?
its an 2005, pretty stock.

Is the play in the turbo up and down, or front to back? Up and down (to a degree) is ok. Front to back, no good.

Do you have an automatic or manual? Grinding noise in neutral could be a clutch.

Does it change with RPM?

If its a Manual My Throw out bearing would start to screech But in gear go away Not long after it started to in gear. Dropped the tranny New throw out bearing good as new. Did it my self as they want 700.00 for labor for a 30.00 part.

Please fill in your signature with all your trucks specifics it will help us all help you.

it's a lot cheaper to get a diagnosis from a professional mechanic rather than throwing a lot of parts at it that aren't needed

My AC compressor clutch made a hell of a racket when it failed... Don't think it's your turbo based on given info.
