The 48re was indeed built to withstand the higher hp and tq numbers with slightly better gearing but for the most part they are based on the same concept.

Planetary Gear is better in the 48re and the heat treatment on the input, output shafts are better.

so does that mean the old school 727 non overdrive non lockup has basically the same internals as the 48re? interchangeable parts? i honestly dont see how these transmissions put diesel power to the ground at all. i know they do, but im not seeing it

Your truck has only and OD lockout, 05 and newer have the TH feature, 06 and newer have TH plus OD off.
The 48RE has a slightly better input shaft, all steel planetaries, more clutches in the critical places, a better TC, and higher flow pump. Most of the hard parts will interchange with 727 and 46\47 units.
