2003 had the 47re and the 48re which was just coming into the picture, by 2004 the 48re was in all auto equipped Ram heavy dutys.

What are the differences between the two...just gearing or is the 48re any stronger than the 47re?

I know the 47 only had O/D lock-out while the 48 has T/H and O/D Lock-out.

Beyond that, not too sure myself.

The 48re was indeed built to withstand the higher hp and tq numbers with slightly better gearing but for the most part they are based on the same concept.

Planetary Gear is better in the 48re and the heat treatment on the input, output shafts are better.

so does that mean the old school 727 non overdrive non lockup has basically the same internals as the 48re? interchangeable parts? i honestly dont see how these transmissions put diesel power to the ground at all. i know they do, but im not seeing it

T/H is Tow Haul: Increased pressures and (I believe) A change in shift points, not sure if the TC locks up earlier or not. I always leave mine in T/H, except for tunnels and sound walls where I select O/D lock-out.

In order No, Yes, No, No.

Your truck has only and OD lockout, 05 and newer have the TH feature, 06 and newer have TH plus OD off.

The 48RE has a slightly better input shaft, all steel planetaries, more clutches in the critical places, a better TC, and higher flow pump. Most of the hard parts will interchange with 727 and 46\47 units.
