need help with 05 dodge 2500

New to this site and it has some great advice to be told. I hope you all can help me. I have a 05 dodge ram 2500. When it first started messing up it was loosing power and sounding like a farm tractor. This would happen after a 10 mile drive. it acted just fine, good acceleration good MPG then boom no power had to shift down to 4th and chugging the rest of they way in to work. When I got to work and let it idle it did sound like a John Deer Tractor. Talked to an auto parts guy and he suggested I should add some sea-foam to the tank and after a full tank the chugging went away for about a week but it came back. I tried more sea-foam and it helped. This went on for about a month and it was becoming harder to start. After 4 or so bottles of sea foam the chugging went away but it was almost impossible to start in hot or cold conditions. It takes a full 2 to 3 minutes of cranking to get it started. Letting it rest of course. Once it gets started it runs like a champ. I have replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump in tank, found out the hard way there is no lift pump on my year just the fuel pump. ( sorry auto zone for the harsh words about your mother), 2 brand new batteries with a full 1000 cranking amps each, new fuel cap, new heater grid and both relays. The next thing I was going to replace was the fuel injector pump but holy cow those are pricey along with the injectors. Does anyone know what the heck is going on and what I should test next? or worse replace? lol Thank you

Don't just throw parts at it!

Ask around for a reputable diesel mechanic in your area. A decent diagnosis is what you need first.

Not throwing parts at it. I have a code reader and I have done everything that the codes tell me. Code reader does not give any more codes at this time. All mechanics I have talked to want to see the truck and dump $$$$ into it. That is why I came to this site to get advice from members that have had this happen to them and what I should test next. Anyone can suggest to let a mechanic look at it. If I wanted a mechanic to look at it I would not be here asking for "good" advice or techniques to try.

The fuel pump IS the lift pump....just different terminology...

The only way we can help is if you share the codes with us

Yea figured that out after a conversation with the auto parts guy and purchasing the chiltons book. Hence the apology to auto zone's mother. lol. No more codes are given. I plug my reader into the port and it says nothing. (yes it is turned on and batteries are fresh) lol. Every code it has given me I have fixed. It just takes forever for it to start. Isn't there a check valve or something on the fuel injector pump? It acts like there is no fuel getting to the injectors. when it does start there is no big puff of smoke, or when I put it under a load no smoke. It just cranks around 500 rpm and then after 2 or 3 tries it will start. Just really baffled.

If you would tell us what the codes are that you fixed it might help to give us a overall picture of what is going on.

The only code that is showing up is P2607. That is intake preheater heater faulty. I never cleared that one out. I replaced the heater grid and relays. Just tried to start it up and it still will not start after a total of 3min starting giving a full 30 sec rest between tries. I talked to a friend at work and he suggested I ohm each fuel injector to see what is the bad one. I am very knowledgeable with a volt meter what is the number I am looking for and is there an easy process to accomplish this?

Get a high pressure gauge for the fuel rail and check the fuel pressure while cranking. Very well could be a CP3 failure...
