finding codes without a scanner

My check engine light came on and I was told I could use the key on/key off method to read the codes. I tried turning the key on and off 3 time as advised and all that happened was the little engine symbol flashed 10 times then remained on steady. Nothing displayed on the odometer other than the mileage on the truck as usual. Before I take it down the dealer or someplace to get the computer read, is there something I'm missing? It's a 2006 3/4 T with a stock 5.9.

Sometimes you have to turn it four times... I've got a video somewhere...

I've been told on another forum that the key on/ key off method of displaying codes doesn't work on 2006 and up. Will check into an inexpensive reader.

That stinks. I'm sure you know, Autozone or the like will have a scanner and will read codes for free.

Harbor freight has cheap scanners.

Key cycle to read codes worked on my 07, works on my 12, doesn't work on my 16, I believe it stopped in 13. Are you doing it fairly quickly? When you put the key in turn one click forward, then from there, forward back from ACC. to RUN 3 times ending in run, codes should pop up in the odometer. My father in law had a hard time getting the timing down but once he figured it out, it works in his 12 as well. Should take about 2 seconds to do the 3 clicks for it to work.

good luck!
