Is 26 mpg + possible on 2005 2wd 6 speed?
I just purchased a 2005 6 speed 2wd quad cab with 120K and 3:73 rear axle. It has some high end Michelin A/S tires. The top console said it was averaging 22.6 mpg. I have no idea when the last time it was reset or if it even accurate. I ran a 1/4 tank thru it and filled it up and reset the display to Zero. I have not towed with it yet and drive conservativly in town (between 1000 - 1600 rpm) and at 75 the rpm is ~2150. The console says I am averaging 26.6 mpg. Since I haven't ran a full tank thru it I have yet to do the math - but I am curious - is that kind of mpg legitimate or is my overhead on 2005 2wd 6 speed or is my console living a dream?

I have seen some that were close and I have seen some that was way off. The 05, 3500, 4x4 w/3.73's will tell me that i'm averaging 24-26 then when I fill up and calculate by hand it was really 16-17. The 05, 2500, 4x4 w/3.55's was better and when empty I could get 22-24, calculated by hand. The 2500 seemed that the more miles on the odometer, the better the fuel mileage was. We traded it off with just over 310,000 miles on it and was getting close to the 26 mpg mark.

Years ago I hit 24.5mpg while keeping the speeds below 65mph. I wouldn't doubt 26mpg if keeping the speeds at 55mph.
Don't trust the Lie-O-Meter, always hand calculate.
