2005 Ram 3500 - Abrupt Engine Failure

Truck info
2005 Dodge Ram 3500
5.9 CTD
NV5600
Jake Brake installed (Cummins)
185,000 miles
Bought new in 2005

Truck as never been modified or had any issues.
Never been abused or overloaded.
All maintenance performed in a timely manner using proper parts / fluids
Besides wear parts, the only items that have been repaired / replaced are a cam sensor and #4 HP fuel line at about 150,000 miles

Driving home yesterday while pulling our 11,000 lb fifth wheel, I took off from a stop light. At about 25 or 30 MPH, a hear a "boom". I thought I had blown a tire, but within a second or 2, the engine lost all power. I coasted onto the shoulder and stopped.

Had truck towed home, here is what I know.

Truck cranks and turns over, but doesn't sound right. I only tried this once, since I didn't want to risk any further damage.

No fluids leaking anywhere.

Oil looks right on the line and appears to be clean and did not smell any fuel.

No check engine light or engine codes displayed.

Fuel pump in tank can be heard when key is turned on.

Fuel runs out of filter housing like it supposed to.

About 5000 miles since oil and fuel filters were changed. Blackstone Labs checked an oil sample at 180,000 miles and reported no negative findings.

I had ran about 350 miles on this tank of fuel and was down to about 3/8 of a tank.

No visible signs of a damaged or missing hose, line, belt, etc.

Any idea of what has happened?

Thanks,

Dan

Check intake from turbo to the engine, sounds like a boot or cooler, lost turbo to intake;

Thanks for the reply. If I understand your reply, you're suggesting that the intake passage way has an extra opening due to hose coming off the fitting, the intercooler splitting open, or something similar to this?

I will check this tomorrow. If you don't mind explaining, why would an occurrence like this make such a loud noise?

Thx,
Dan

This….particularly if your 2005 has true intercooler with PLASTIC end tanks instead of the all aluminum intercooler.

The truck definitely has plastic ends on the intercooler. I will look at this closely.

I would assume the truck would start and run with a damaged intercooler?? I thought it wouldn't have any power though..

Not doubting what your saying, just trying to figure out what's going on and how things work.

Thanks again for your info.

Yes, it will start and run, but with no power because unable to build boost from turbo, the loud boom would the boot or cooler bursting, you may have to start it up and have some one step on the accelerator to get the turbo to spool up to find the problem;

When towing that size load, you already are building considerable boost, just to get it moving. Good luck with what ever u find;

Update

I carefully looked at the intercooler, hoses, tubes, couplings, etc, related to the air intake and did not see any damaged or loose components. If there is anything wrong with any of these items, it would have to be something very small. Certainly nothing that would seem to go along with the loud boom I heard when the truck stopped running.

Tried to start the truck, but it would not run at all. It sounded like it tried to fire up a couple of times, but never started.

Still no error codes displayed. I am thinking it might be a fuel system problem, but not why wouldn't it display any type of error code???

Thanks for those who replied, am open to any other suggestions....

TIA

It's obvious you are not a mechanic. Anything you get here will be a WAG. You need to give the truck to a good mechanic.....believe me it's cheaper! Stupid is always expensive. Part of being smart is knowing what you don't know!

Definitely not a mechanic, especially on a diesel. Just wanted to have a general idea of what happened prior to taking it again.

Thx

Looking at some of the posts in this and other forums, it seems that most of the dropped valves are on trucks with several engine mods....
