Winterizing our trucks!!

Just curious as to what should be done to winterize our trucks. What kind of things do you do to make your winter drives in your trucks better. Post all suggestions.

Thanks

Ryan

Re:Winterizing our trucks!!

TEDHRS:

I live in Northern Michigan on the Lake Michigan Shore so we get our share of winter here. I use grill covers to help the CTD warm up faster. If I didn't it wouldn't reach operating temperature by the time I got to work, which isn't good for them. Leaves moisture in the engine. I also use a fuel conditioner to help keep the fuel from gelling. I have a 74 gal aux. tank, and I make sure that I keep both tanks full so that I don't get condensation in the tanks. Also, I try to drive my daughter's car as much as possible and leave the truck in the garage ;D I do drive it at least once a week just to keep the batteries up and things lubricated. (I have a 3500 4x2, so it isn't the best in the snow anyway.) Also, don't let it idle for more than 10 minutes or so unless you have an exhaust brake. You can't warm up a diesel by letting it idle, it just won't happen.

I hope that this helps some.

DeWain

Re:Winterizing our trucks!!

specify grille cover for me, what type of material and where to mount it. Does it affect engine temps overall when being driven?

Re:Winterizing our trucks!!

I just got the winter guards. They are listed in the classifieds on here. They look real nice on the truck! I also use a fuel additive, Howe's diesel treat & M.P.K.

Tony

Re:Winterizing our trucks!!

I bought a black vinyl winterfront from Cabelas for around 40 bucks. It has zippered openings for warmer days. Seems to work very well. My beast won't reach operating temps. for love nor money below 40 degrees without it.

Re:Winterizing our trucks!!

First chech your anti-freeze and make sure that it has a freezeing point that is recommended for your area. Change your oil to winter weigh. 15/40 Rottella works for me and I live in Alaska. Check your block heat if installed. I recommend installing and in line energy saver cord it will turn your heaters on and off as need. Turns on at 20 degrees and shuts off at 40 degrees. Silicon oil pan heater 100 watt, silicon transmisssion heaters 100watt. silicon battery heater 75 watt or 2 amp trickle charge interior heat 850 watts optional. The amount of winterization you do depends on the area you live. Besure that your tires are in good shape, if you add weigth for traction besure to secure it, slow down. Ice and snow scrapper..
