wierd front tire wear
my 02 4x4 has ripples on both sides-evenly with only 5800 miles.
Got my dss today and hope that will fix it. 2 dealers say the front end is fine, so tired of wasting time at dealerships. Any other possible fixes? Mileage is so low cause it steeres like a truck that is my age, thanks.

You might try taking a look at http//dodgeram.org/tech/specs/00_steer_specs.html
It had some good reading regarding aligneing these things. Specifically that "in tolerance" isn't good enuf.
There's some links to other alignment info there too.

Sometimes sidewall rippling is caused by a broken cord in the tire. Suggest you have the folks you bought the tires from take a look. If it is a broken cord replacement will be free.

these ripples are on the contact surface-both edges of both tires about 2 inches worth. the wear that would be easier to trouble shoot would be one edge or the other but both?

Thanks for that link just now got to see it. It should be very usefull at the dealer should I loose my memory and choose to go back there. Just installed the dss but haven't had a test drive yet. I am using 285 michellins at 60 psi, also took a much harder look at the wear and it is mostly on the outside. There is a tsb on toe in so that may help. Information is a powerfull thing, this is one powerfull site.

I had my truckin the shop yesterday for the same thing. Toe was out and I was told the 4X4 trucks wear tires differently than 2 wheel. The tires that have the breaks on the edges will cup. They said I need "steer" tires on the front. No breaks in the rubber, no cupping.

That's BS, if the front is aligned and alls good and tight the front tires will wear evenly.

I run my Michelin 285's at 60 psi and just rotated them after first 6,000 miles. Fronts showed no cupping at all - could feel no uneveness rubbing outside tread in either direction! Was very impressed. Had DSS on before buying Michelins.
Maybe the DSS made all the difference but can't be sure. Had fairly bad cupping at 5,000 miles on last set of cheap 285's from Walmart - also with DSS in place. On the other hand those Walmart tires were really poor quality.
Now that you have the DSS on, I would rotate tires and watch closely for signs of alignment problems... Just my thoughts.
Good Luck and let us know , Rowland

I have heard that shocks can cause cupping in the tires, in addition to alignment problems. I have not personally been able to prove this true, but mine are cupping a little now, only on the inside I think, and I have been meaning to tighten up my adjustable shocks, but can't seem to remember to do it.

DSS = Darin's Steering Stabilizer. Excellent product for controlling that "road Wander" feeling as well as preventing future expense of repairing poor design of Dodge's Steering Box/Pitman Arm Assembly. Not enough structural support in the factory design.
