Key fob for stock alarm/door locks
My Keyfob for my 99 doesn't want to work anymore. Have replaced batteries with no success. Using spare which works.
Is there a fix?

The link is in Tech Facts. 2nd Generation- Non Drivetrain. I haven't used it myself, but the instructions look pretty complete.

Yes, you can purchase additional fobs, and actually, program them yourself depending on the year truck you have. I have 3 for mine.

Do I understand this correctly?? My 94 with elect. door locks did not come with fob's so I can purchase them from dealer? Or does the truck have to come with keyless entry of somesorts?? Thanks Rick

Re:Key fob for stock alarm/door locks
I'll second what Diesel Dave said. There's no way I would pay a dealer their outrageous price for the keyfobs. You can buy them used or new off of eBay for a FRACTION of the cost. I bought two new key fobs for the Dodge that I just bought (because it didn't come with any) for 12.00!!! The dealership wanted like 40.00 each for them, or something outrageous. I was stuck over a barrel getting them programmed, though, since you can only program them yourself if you already have a key fob that's working. With no working key fobs you're stuck at having someone with a programmer (dealership) program them. Typical cost is from 40-55.00 for both key fobs (or the same price for one). Programming only takes about 15 min. or so - but they'll tell you it takes an hour so they can charge you for an hour of labor.

Re:Key fob for stock alarm/door locks
Kandgo,
Your truck has to have the keyless entry option for the key fobs to work. You can't just use stock power locks. If you bought the truck used and don't know if it has keyless entry then all you have to do is call the dealership and give them your VIN and they'll tell you whether or not you have keyless entry on your truck. If you have keyless entry, all you have to do is get the part number for the remotes and search on eBay for that part number - then have the dealership program the. You can expect to spend 40-70 dollars on the whole ordeal, but it's NICE having keyless entry.

Re:Key fob for stock alarm/door locks
Did not want to start a new thread - but I just purchased a 98 2500 and only have one of the keyless entry units, and would like to get an additional one. I noticed the TSB only included 99+, so is it possible to pick up an eBay unit for my 98 and program it myself - or do I have to head to the dealership?
Thanks

Re:Key fob for stock alarm/door locks
DRM,
Do you have a service manual or owner's manual for your truck? I know in my '01 owner's manual there are instructions for programming your fob (if you already have one that's programmed). However, I don't know if it's the same instructions for your year. If you don't have the manual, I'd try the above procedure with a new key fob - course someone else should chime in with an exact answer!
