'best truck' Q but using purchase price too

Here's a variant of the current thread about the best truck:

I'm considering moving up to a 2nd gen, would need to be:

2500
ext cab
long or short box, doesn't matter
4x4
manual tranny
under 120k mi (I have 175k on mine, can't see upgrading to a newer truck without buying some miles as well)

Now, I know 98+ gets the quad cab, a nice thing, and 2001.5 gets the 4wdisc, very nice.
I've heard that the 98.5-00 24v trucks are to be avoided? Is this a myth? If not, what's wrong with them? Is this the 053 block problem?

I will admit I like the 12v, but I also like the 6spd.

Here's what I've seen on the market:

There are a few 95-97 trucks matching my desires out there, lucky if can be found for $15,000 asking price. Many more around $18,000

Now....if you look at 01-02's, 01's for sure, lots of them at $23,000, but many 6spd units at $21,000, some lower.

Question is, what is the better buy? A stock 95-97 as above for $15,000, or a stock 01 HO (hopefully disc braked rear) for $21,000?

After having a '96 and absolutely despising the brakes, I jumped at the chance to get discs and I think they are worth their weight in gold. I am very happy with my '01.

I love my 01 spd as compared to my auto 98 12v'er. Don't get me wrong, the 98 was a hellava truck, but I just love throwing that shifter around.

As for an 01 for 21k, that seems about right, depending on milage. I paid almost 21k for mine with 48k miles. I guess it also just depends on what you plan on doing to/with the truck. Bombing 12'vers in cheaper and simpler, but if you plan on keeping her around stock, then I'd go w/ the newer models.

good luck,

Hunter

I don't need a ton of power. I'm on a 16cm^2 housing, 2 turns in past the collar, starwheel all in and smoke all in on my 91, still below what a stock 01 is putting to the ground by a long shot I would guess. So, I believe if I bought an 01 bone stock would be plenty. If I bought a 12v, I would put the 230/600 plate in it I'm sure.

And the prices are the asking prices, mostly from dealerships. I would assume there's an easy $1500 room on them, but the differencial tween the 2 different yrs should be about the same I'd think. So the question is the 01 worth $6k more than the 12v...
