Ball Joint acceptable play/Steering dampener

What is the tolerance for ball joints before they are needing replaced? Also how/when does the steering dampener need replaced?

If you can see any slop at all in a ball joint assume it's shot.

About the only way short of having the steering wheel wrenched out of your hands when you hit a pot hole is the remove one end of the steering stabilizer and compress and extend it. It should have the same amount of resistance the whole length of it's travel both directions with no jerks or drag.
