285's with stock wheels

I called Discount Tire about some 285 Coopers and they said I wouldn't be happy with them on stock wheels because they won't fit right and would need a 9" rim to prevent road walking, etc. For those of you are running stock wheels & bigger tires, did you notice any of this or they just trying to get another $400 out of me?

And I know this is going to sound stupid on my part, but how do I know if I have 6.5" width rim or an 8" rim without taking the tire off? They said the reason for the bigger rim is because the Coopers need a 9" rim. My truck is an slt with the stock chrome wheels.

I have 285's with stock rims, and they are fine. I have towed heavy, and hauled heavy, with no issues. They do not "road walk". I will include a photo of my truck with 285's on it.

That's what I thought...they were trying to sell me some rims. I do have the 8" stock aluminum rims so I can't see why they wouldn't work. FYI, they are Cooper ATP 285/75/16E for $160 a piece!

I have 265's on 8" rims, don't see why 285's wouldn"t work.

Yea, I'm already running 265's too. They claimed this was a pretty good tire and they were doing all they could to talk me out of it unless I bought 9" rims.

A good portion of my trucks 250,000 miles have been running 285's on the stock aluminum wheels, some of those miles are with 315's to boot.

You won't have any problems.

I've ran multiple 285s with no problems whatsoever. Been getting about 50k miles per set depending on rotation schedule.

Different year trucks had different sizes of stock rims. I'm not sure when Dodge went to the bigger rim though.

Generally speaking, if yours came with 265-75/R16 tires then you'll be just fine going up to 285-75/R16. The 285s on my truck are working great.

If they don't think you should run 285's on an 8" rim I wonder what they would think about my 315's on 8.5" rim? HMM, gotta love salesmen

Called today to buy the tires & they refused to mount them on a rim less than 8.5" wide. Said it was a legal issue that the company adopted after someone was killed because a 315 was mounted on a 7" wheel & it blew causing a wreck. Guess I'll spend a little more & get them local.
