285's on a dually question... sorry

I have looked online for about 4 months now and found TONS of info on the "do they rub" and "will they cup" questions. The problem is a lot of it is conflicting.

I have a 96 3500 4x4 xcab with the factory steel wheels and I want to run a 285/75/16. can I do it and what is involved please?!

I am planning on ordering a set of 265/75/16 nitto's if the 285's are a no go... ordering this week so quick and accurate responses will be MUCH appreciated. pics would make me REEEEAAAL happy also b/c I've only found one.

also- on epinions.com 8 out of 9 reviews said they were getting poor mileage out of these terra grapplers especially the HD and 1 ton guys. Is this true? what are the best tire recommendations for an E range AT?

I have 315/70/16 on mine. I had to put a 2" spacer between the rear wheels. They have about a 1 1/4" of space. A friend put 285/75/16 remington mud brutes on his 02 3500 he had to put the 2" spacer on his has about the same distance. With the welding skid and his camber hooked up he does not have much room between the two. Just FYI if you plan on hauling alot of weight.

Depending on what you hual you don't really need E rated tires the D's will do just fine for most loads in a dual setup. I used to run 255/85r16 load range D on my dually with a 3000+ lb overhead camper and never had a problem with the tires.

As for wear the size won't make them cup, but a shoulder tread with alot of spacing will in almost any size. The wear problem comes is with running to wide of tire on to narrow of wheel, they will wear the center quite a bit faster unless you under inflate.

My buddy has 315/75r16 load range D maxxis bighorn's on his 97 3500, He has a 2.5" spacer and has about .75" in between the duals. He runs IIRC about 45psi in his tires and still gets a little faster center wear.

For 285/75r16 you could probably get away with 1.5" or 1.75" spacer, but you'll probably have to cut the lug studs down for this size spacer so most poeple get 2"

Another option you could consider is 255/85R16 for the rear and 285/75r16 for the front. If you look around most companies that make 255's also make 285's in the same tread and they are exactly the same height and load capacity. Or if you just want the height not the width just get 255's all the way around most of these are only load D, but Toyo does make the M55 in a load range E in both those sizes IIRC. You don't need a spacer to run 255's on a dually they are close and will touch a tiny bit if loaded heavy, but I did it for 3 years with no problems until I regeared my truck.

Hope all this info helps...Josh

thanks for the info fella's. I bought the 285/75/16 "D" rated Mastercraft Courser AT/2's today (only found the 255's in a bfg m/t, yuck). I got them mounted and balanced without any issues... they actually only called for about 2ounces per wheel!

I am a little concerned about center wear but inflated to 50psi and will rotate every 5k miles with the oil change/greasing and see.

so with a 2" spacer will my wheels stick out of the dually fender and stone/scratch my truck to death? anybody have experience with this setup? also does anyone know a company to make economic but wider (8") dually rims other than rickson and high dollar "custom" setups.

I will haul about 10k lbs. with this rig once my rockbuggy is completed through the NC mountains on a semi regular basis.

btw- she looks KILLER... I will post pics tomorrow once she's cleaned up.

Yes they sill stick out past the fenders. My buddy doesn't have a problem with it scratching his truck, but then his truck has sun burned original paint and I doubt he cares much. As for the wider wheels, $$$$ customs is all that he has ever found.

285/75 R16 bfg at's with 2" spacer will stick out about an inch and 1/4 past the top of the dually fender.

Here's my truck with the 285/75 R16's and 2" spacer between the duals

And here without the fender flares:

And this is the recent condition with the 37x12.5 Pro Comps and 3rd gen dually wheels with the same 2" spacer between those:

That sure is a nice looking truck with the bigger tires and mud flaps and fender flares. Mean looking bumper too.

Thanks for your kind comments guys!
As you see, I have done all the mods to my truck by myself, except the spacer and the 285 tires.

mr_diy: so you have 285 tires without spacers? You're nuts! I'm sure your duals will rub and thats dangerous. But as you said, the spacers are on their way. Nice truck, and the paint isn't thaaat baad. Keep good care of your truck.

ps:you should fulfill your signature so we all can see what kind of truck you have and what are your mods.
