Vp44 error codes 216
My 2002 Dodge diesel first 216 code was 3 years ago, everyone tells me its the injector pump... truck continues to run fine with or without MIL light on.... Dealer Dependable Dodge replaced TPS last year for $800.00 then said it needs vp44, don't think so. Help! Does anyone know a REAL cummings mechanic in Los Angeles SFV Area?

I can GUARANTEE you that P0216 is not a VP death code. Let me guess, did your lift pump die? P0216 can be set with no lift pump pressure. i have a friends 02 that has been running now for 7 years after his code was set.

The 0216 code means the fuel timing piston isnt achieving proper timing. I wont sugar coat it as "generally" that means the VP timing piston and sleeve are worn out. Usually in time (no pun) the loose timing piston will eventually beat itself silly inside the sleeve and thats when it quits. But as pointed out, a fuel piston timing error can be set by a "weak" timing piston in combination with a poor transfer fuel pump supply to the VP. A new fuel pump may just set you right.....
Dont let the dealers do any work on your truck either. They usually know no more than anyone else and they charge a fortune. $800 for an APPS is a joke since you can pick up a Timbo APPS for just over a $100.

Thanks for your posts
Actually I did put an Air Dog lift pump on last year and it has been code free until I towed my 5th wheel to San Diego and while on cruise it down shifted and MIL light lit up... set 5 codes 382, 380, 216, 215, & 1689! WOW! Found all but one code 215... not listed... Any clues?

Sounds like a potential electrical issue. Either bad batteries, bad/loose/or corroded connections at the batteries or any other major connection, loose ground, broken wire somewhere, or the alternator is not putting out the correct voltage and/or too much AC noise. Something in that long laundry list.....

Are you sure it wasn't a 251?
The 1689 kind of bothers me, my experience has been when only the 216 is thrown.
Here is a diagnostic course to run.

Thanks for posting that link, I read it some time ago and see how much it has been updated. The driveability issue is so true, my 2002 continues to run fine. I have an ongoing issue with battery crud... plan on replacing all cables. Must be numerious other grounds for ECM, PCM and electrical!
