vacuum pump and oil leak-poor milage

Hi, started a new thread cause the problem has become more defined. appreciate any help

guy i bought truck from had just replaced the powersteering reservoir. after that, oil is literally pouring from the vacuum pump and powersteering pump area.

on top of that, the truck has a PAC ENGINE BRAKE, an exhaust brake which is controlled by a vacuum cartridge.

i'm thinking that the oil leak is from the vacuum pump and it is also causing the vacuum pump to not create as much vacuum as it should, which in turn may be causing the exhaust brake to remain partially closed, which is what is causing my poor milage (11 mpg)

does this sound reasonable,,and can anyone share a good way to check the idle vacuum on the truck.

and does anyone know what probably caused the oil leak if a powersteering reservoir was replaced?

thanks very much for any replies

Known issue with the seal between the two pumps. There are repair kits. PIA to put in, but inexpensive fix. Just a lot of time and frustration to perform the install. I would think the brake is off without vacuum and on with vacuum so probably not the cause of your poor mileage.

i called local dodge dealer for new seal but he did not mention a kit for that, are they after market? what is best place to get? i'm not a big diesel guy so "well known" supply places are not on my radar yet.

cummins part #4089742 about $10 at your local cummins dealer also check your fuel pressure at the pump. a faulty VP44 can cause low MPGs also iats and map sensors can cause low MPGs

also, do you think that if someone put the powersteering pump back on the vacumm pump wrong and caused a oil leak, would it cause low vacuum?

injector pump has been recently replace, and transfer pump is also new and on the frame. my fuel pressure is 15 or 16 and doesn't seem to ever go lower, even under load.

Vacuum & oil pump are connected by drive dog. Replacing the seals should take care of it. fixinrams sells a video and is helpful in diagnosing if you are unsure. I figure he prices his knowledge at $25 for this issue. Very easy process once you get into it. Don't over think it.

Apparently all of them.

Not gonna happen AND you will be considered un-American for sounding that alarm.

thanks for everyones advice. put in seal kit and extreme oil leak is fixed!!!!

took me all day, i think the guy who put on the new powersteering pump before me simply didn't line up the dogs and the shaft did't go into the seal far enough.

i just hope that this also fixes my oil consumption and milage problem, as i think this was causing poor vacuum.

I don't see the video still for sale on his site,

http://www.fixinrams.com/

Here is a partial Youtube clip, gives the biggest part of it. I took the whole assy out and did it on the bench, but you could probably do it his way easier.
