new here! truck problems

new to the forums! hello everyone im having a problem kinda if anyone could give me any ideas or what to do that would be nice. (first diesel truck. all stuck) i got a 01 cummins 6 speed. last week the truck jelled up so i had to put a heater to it after that it ran fine. today in the morning was -7F outside had the truck plunged in all night. let it warm up for 15 mins then took off. when going down the road the truck kept having lose of power and white smoke... i turned around went home. drove it around and it was then fine. no white smoke no lose of power took it to work and back and nothings wrong. i checked the codes and one of them is po216.. injection pump. but its not doing it anymore? could this have been from the cold weather?

Yep, fuel was gelling, get it treated.

We have had several gel this year around here, they didn't get the additive package right for the extreme cold we have been getting.

I dose mine heavy in addition to the additive package.

if you haven't in awhile and its due then change out the fuel filter and put in a bottle of additive in tank. if you dont change the filter dump some in the filter housing and in tank. drive it get the additive in the entire system before shutting down.

0216 is not a death code.

I have one running for 8 years now, it is a timing control code and can be set by low or no fuel pressure, which obviously you had.

Clear it and see if it comes back.

For some reason auto parts stores stopped reading codes for customers. But no matter, its wise to have your own code reader too. You can pick up a relatively decent scanner for about $100 which will tell you all you need to know. I carry one in the truck at all times. Also, the real cheap scanners have been known to not show all the codes in the system.

The P0216 code is definitely not a code you want but as pointed out, it "could" be from fuel supply issues. Since you're new in the Cummins world, you'll be hearing how important it is to have gauges, especially a fuel pressure gauge. Running too low of fuel pressure will cause all kinds of unwanted problems with the injection pump system and eventual failure.
