Exhaust brake, without the brake??

Exhaust brake, without the brake??
Ive got the automatic, but...
without turning off od, or manually gearing down...
after traveling at highway speeds for a bit, and i let off the go pedal but then give it 'just a touch' and hold it there, the engine makes a sound like an exhaust brake. no, definitely not loud and deafening, or useful like the real ones, but it does seem to slow me down quite a bit.
Any comments?
