Dead Pedal, and cleared itself?

Everything is working well, my batteries are only 2 years old.
I have read it both on the dash and OBDll, both say P0216.
It's just those crappy VP44's. It acts just like the 2 previous failures,
the first at 102,521 miles, 07/10/2010
the second at 192,538 miles. 08/18/2012
This one went at 219, 750(or very close to it) 05/15/2014
BOSCH JUNK!
The only thing worse than a VP44 failing is owning a Ford or Chevy truck

Well thats definitely the timing control malfunction code. But in saying that, this is a "mechanical" failure of the VP as its a result of timing piston wear within the piston sleeve. Not something commonly seen for a remanufactured VP. Those remanufactured upgraded VP's have steel sleeves and many more upgrades too. Sounds like this last VP was no good from the get go or you have a problem with fuel quality. Have you considered running some 2-stroke in the fuel? Lots of people run around a quart or a pint of 2-stroke oil in every tank in order to help offset the lack of lubrication offered in todays ULSD. The best and cheapest stuff is surprisingly at Walmart too. About $15 a gallon.

I am not a dead pedal expert, but, when I pull up my log driveway, it's like you slipped your foot of the diesel pedal, a little more than idle RPM at full throttle,
Re-set by turning on and off the ignition switch and all is good sometimes for a moment, sometimes longer.
Friday, I started her up first time of the day, reset 3 times going up the drive way, drove to Atlanta and back, 450 miles with no problems.
Oh and I am getting a water in fuel light when she sits for long periods.
With the engine running, I purge the filter, light goes out, need an additive.

I'm interested to see what you eventually figure out because I have to say that in the past 12 years or so I've never heard of a VP acting like this. Sounds more like an APPS related issue to me. For whatever reason the APPS doesn't always throw codes either. I'd try resetting the APPS (not the same as what you're calling "reset") and then see if it does it again.

To reset the APPS remove both negative battery cables and leave them off for 30 mins.... then hook them back up and turn the key to the start position without cranking the starter....turn it off and back on two more times leaving it on the third time then slowly push the pedal all the way to the floor and let it back up...then switch the key off...the apps then RESET.

What's an APPS do?
I have a neighbor that had a 2002 and experienced P0216 from time to time. He suggested I let the truck warm up for 3 to five minutes in the morning and that usually eliminated his 'Dead Pedal"
I tried that this morning....it seems to work...why?

APPS is an acronym for accelerator pedal positioning sensor. It tells the VP what the gas pedal is doing. These trucks are "drive by wire" whereby the throttle pedal and the injection pump are not directly connected but communicate through an electrical connection kinda like an RC car servo. So you can imagine what would happen if that communication was interrupted.
Sometimes the APPS can get out of sync. You can reset the APPS by fully disconnecting the batteries from the truck and turning the key to ON for 1/2 hour to drain the electrical system. Turn key OFF and re-connect the batteries. Turn key back to ON and depress the throttle to the floor and back, then turn the key back OFF. APPS is now reset.

Dead pedel PROBLEM
90 % of the time you get a dead pedal it is telling you your throttle positioning sensor switch is going out .. the way the comp. Is it will reset itself 3 times . Normally if it goes out the third time you will NOT get your pedal back and you will have to be towed .. New replacement switch from Dodge cost $ 630.00 cash & carry...some years the switch is under the accelerator pedal , other years it is under the hood at the front of the engine where the linkage hooks up. Norval...

(I purchased the TPS thru a diesel shop for about $175)
I have not re-set the computer.
The truck runs great after you reset the system with the key a few times.
My guess is it's temperature related, it doesn't like ambient temperature at the moment.
It acts exactly like the last 2 VP failures

Katoom,
Sorry for not getting back sooner. Been real busy. I pulled out the receipt and it was $337. My bad.
Still have the issue with the hard start but it isn't a problem since I avoid it by delaying start for a few seconds.
