Cheap parts truck for 2001 2wd to 4x4 conversion
How old of a truck can I use for a mostly bolt on conversion? Also are any 1500 4x4 parts interchangeable on my 2500 ?

Honestly, you would be absoultley CRAZY to attempt this. Sell the truck and buy a 4x4. Done. It will be a hillbilly deluxe special. Sell the truck, pull the fass out of it and thats it.

It's been done may times but don't use any 1500 parts on a 3/4 to please.
If you are going to keep truck forever it's no problem, but if you plan to sell you will lose a lot of money trying to explain why your VIN says 2wd but truck is a 4wd, also you might want to have it inspected at a reputable DOT shop and ask your insurance agent if they will cover an accident once truck it's been modified.
You don't want to find out when it's too late

Will a 4x4 gas 2500 have interchangeable parts? If so how old of a truck will it interchange with? 1998?
It will cost an extra 5000 on top of what I can sell my truck for to buy a comparable 4x4 model not to mention taxes I would have to pay and other costs. I have a good resource in finding wrecked vehicles and good parts if I know what to look for.

find a rolled/wrecked 4x4 2500,but it has to be 8800GVWR ,even a cheaper gas 2500,swap your body onto it,eng.trans into it,and use your rear axle if its the same ratio, its stronger than the gassers.do not buy a 7500 GVWR 2500! it has the 3850 lb GAWR D44 front axle, its to weak for a cummins truck, its overloaded under a cummins before you even get in,or add a winch/plow. If you want it to be as a factory 4x4 would, you can only go back to 2000,since the frotn axles on 99 -94 are different, you'd need a 2000 or newer.mid 01 they went to non CAD axles.

Still will need at the minimum either a diesel specific trans or output shaft, OD unit, input gear to the transfer case, more than likely front, rear, or both driveshafts.
I don't know if the 8800 GVW Gasser trucks had a Dana 70 in the rear either.

Man if I were to consider a conversion, I wouldn't even *consider* the stock garbage frontend. Sloppy, weak wandering junk from one end to the other.
Get a Ford configuration non-unit bearing dana 60, kingpin if you can find one and swing it with leaf springs. Feeling fancy? put a panhard bar in too.
I could make a looooong list of junky parts and design flaws that would be eliminated.
