Binding in 4wd, and hard to shift out of 4wd.
I went to put my new 99 2500 in 4wd to see what it did in the parking lot and it is fine driving straight, but when I go to turn it binds but it does move. Its almost as if I have a locker up front. Also its a pain in the *** to get in and out of 4wd. I had to shift the 4wd shifter back and forth to get it to go back into 4wd. Im going to pop the front diff cover this weekend but want to know if anyone has experienced this before?

That is because you are not supposed to put it in 4WD on hard pavement as this will INDEED cause binding in the drive train especially in your transfer case. Turning the vehicle in 4WD severe aggrivates this condition even off road and can cause damage or breakage to the drive train on hard pavement. The severe power train binding stresses built up from driving it this way on the parking lot pavement likely caused the transfer case to become very difficult to take out of 4WD. 4WD should be used only off road or in snow or wet conditions on pavement so as to allow for slippage of the tires which are driven at different rates.

Mine does the same thing...it is normal. It will bind up like crazy of you are turning on dry pavement...and it will also bind if you crank the wheels on mud/snow/wet pavement. I have owned a 99 and a 2001 (which I have now) and they have both done it. Like WRTN says only use 4x4 in wet/mud/snow.off road...etc.

Getting into 4 low can be a trick. You have to put it in neutral and be sure you are not moving. You can "shift on the fly" from 2-4hi but you have to stop and take it out of gear when shifting into 4 low. There should be no grinding because nothing should be moving when going into 4 low.
By the way...I have never shifted into even 4 hi "on the fly." I'll pop it out but never in...saves on the wear and tear of everything.
