98.5 cummins hard start
I have a 98.5 Dodge Cummins 24 valve. Has the pump in the tank that is putting out 12 psi at 2000 rpm 9psi under load. The problem is that it has a hard start issue it fires up in the morning no problem but when I drive it and it gets warm and then I will let it sit for an hour so then it has hard start. Everything I have read online people with this issue have it not starting in the morning mine fires up in the morning without any problems. Help!

I had that problem with my `99 after I had the block mounted lift pump and IP replaced. He installed an after market pump that put out a higher pressure than the OEM. I found on here that that can cause a 'Hard hot start'. The guy picked it up, replaced the higher press pump with the OEM and all has been fine since then and that's been a few years back. Don't know if that's your issue but worth looking into.

Another quick test-
When hot, bump the starter and wait for 40 seconds and try to start- if it fires up immediately it should be a problem with too high pressure from the lift pump while starting.
The VP 44 loves 0-7 psi while starting and 10-15 psi while running.

Thanks tried that didn't work. I'm thinking air getting into my system somewhere so I'm trying to trace down on my lines. According to the Old owner the pump has been on there for quite a while.

OK, now try the following: Drive the truck until warm, let it sit until it has the hard start condition.
Before trying to start cool the VP44 by trickling some cold water over it.
If it can be brought to fire up immediately like this it's VP44 time.. electronics toast.

Well... the VP 44 dies from different causes:
1.) Wear on the distributor and housing-- postponed by better lubrication added to the fuel
2.) Heat cycling the electronic part-- remedied by living in alaska and only long distance driving.
3.) low fuel pressure- restricted fuel supply--- remedied by a number of vendors who tell you that they have the end-all solution to aal the world's problems.
(This post may contain traces of cynicism -contact whoever you want in case of... )
