Wow! A Clunk Noise- my first...What is the Cause?

First of, Happy Turkey day to all! I want to say "Thanks" to all that have helped me and others on here solve truck dilemmas, and also to our soldiers fighting the battle. Ok, upon parking, two times now, a front end clunk noise comes about after, I did say AFTER, I shut off the engine. When I say front end, I feel the clunk in the cab. All I've done recently is change out transfer case fluids, and add 4 oz. of friction modifier to the rear diff, and turn my AFC star wheel downwards 1 turn clockwise. Lastly, my front diff was slightly overfilled with gear oil, so I drained out about 4 oz to get it just right.

22 year old truck = clunker. Of course it clunks.

Does it clunk as the engine stops turning, or later?

Check your rear shackle bushings in the frame

But most likely you've been initiated into the group with cowl cracks.

Thanksgiving day and both of you 1stGen diehards are the 1st to reply...thanks BTW! I know it's some type of driveline clunk...came about when I turned the truck off, then a loud clunk about 1 second after the engine is off, and the clunk tends to slightly lunge the truck forward. I mean really slight lunge, which tells me it's some type of driveline issue? It's as if it fell into "P"- Park, a second too late. Again, so far, this has happened twice...come to think about it, just remembered this, but before I left to run errands yesterday, when I put it in "R"-reverse, the truck backed up about 2', then stopped for like 5 seconds, I moved the gear shift lever to "D", then back to "R", then the reverse kicked in. You all think it could be related? Man, that's fresh ATF in there, and I double filter that stuff with the pan filter along with a remote, spin on Baldwin filter. When I changed my ATF a month ago the fluid was clean, looked unused, with no burnt smells whatsoever.

Ahhh..

U-joints ever serviced ? Clunk is common from U joints going bad.

More importantly....

Do you have the tracloc LSD in the rear diff, or is it an open diff ?

Trac loc diffs will do that, and eventually will shatter the spider gears. Not saying that's what you have going on, but wannadiesel who used to be on here warned me of this. Dead on. Spiders / clutches worn out was causing that clunk you're talking about.

Do exterior spin on/auxiliary filters affect Trans pump pressures? I have no idea just throwing it out there.

Wow, did not know there was an adjustment for that... Any idea which page in the FSM explains it step by step?

. I'm sure some pressure has to build up, but mine is set up as a bypass, meaning from a new fresh spin on to 15,000 miles later, the fluid has another free path to take rather than muscle it's way thru the pleats all full of fine debris. Also, the filter head, which I got as a kit thru www.dieselsite.com is set up to start bypassing once the filter is full. So, to avoid confusion, I installed it as a bypass set up, even though it already had a built in bypass "relief" set up should the filter start to plug up or pressure start to increase. But I've run this since 2007, and have never had any problems
