Vacuum/Power steering pump

I have a 1990, 12v engine which has had the vacuum pump/pwr steering pump removed. I was advised to replace the missing item with a later gear driven type, the question is, which pumps will fit and work ok? Thanks, Patrick

I will move this to the first gen section so it will get more responses. I "think" you can run any from 89-2002, but the 89-91 non-intercooled ones are much shorter, I think you have to do some changing to run the 91.5-02 units.

One thing for sure, the first gen guys will be all over it for you.

Check the sticky, it is up on top of the main first gen page. I think that there is a thread on how to put the later type pump on a non-ic engine. If it is not there, do a search, there was a recent thread about this...Mark

Vacuum/Pwr steering pump

So after reading all the info I came up with the question; What is wrong with the original pumps? or is this aforementioned upgrade just a nice to have? Did the pumps on the early engines work OK? Just a thought. Patrick

The issue is the bearing that is behind the gear, they are known to go out and send metal into your timing case. I have a 90 and my vacuum pumps bolt lobes cracked and it ended up misaligning itself so I had to do the swap. It really isnt that bad, all you need is an oil line and some fittings. You do have to fab up a support for it. I used a 2 inch wide piece of metal (I think, probably smaller) and mounted it on the vacuum pump as well as connected it to an unused hole on my injection pump. This is all from memory, I can't remember if that is exactly how I did it though. Go to fixinrams.com and call the guy, he helped out a lot.

I still have the originals. I rebuilt the entire thing and it is going strong. All of the parts necessary to rebuild it are available, but you do need a press...Mark

The eccentric bearing can be pushed off and a new one installed using an impact wrench.
