transmission questions

K guys I have been dormant for a few months as Ive been busy w work and such. Truck is running good been fixing stuff a little bit as I go. Working on trying to hook up the speedo, and the tac to my 93 chevy.

context93 chevy 3/4ton diesel 2wd pickup with 93 12valve cummins turbo diesel with 93 dodge transmission A518?)

For the TACH this motor has a tach pickup on the crank pulling with 3 wires. Red white black? I assume red power black ground white signal?

For speedo, the transmission is I believe an a518 with 2 connectors. and then all the way on the tail is a 3rd connector that I believe to be the speedo? sensor? has many wires and is coiled up. I have not counted the number of wires. Wondering if anybody has experience with this, and if its possible to bring the signal wire into the chevy harness for a working speedo?

(would appreciate any info thanks for the help)

Thoughts?

will post pics tomorrow.

Does the Chevy use a cable or is it electronic? If so there are earlier sensors that will accept a cable. I don't know what specifically but probably an earlier gas truck or Dakota.

Otherwise I have no idea how the Chevy works, but if it's electronic it could use a completely different algorithm than the Dodge so you would have to experiment.

There's only two wires on the Dodge. The PCM needs it for O/D to work. I would suggest looking into one of the sensors that use a cable so you could piggyback the Chevy sensor on it with a short cable for the speedo.

Swaps are always a pain. And not knowing what parts of each vehicle you are using make it more difficult. Are you using the Dodge PCM and wiring for the engine and trans? GM and Dodge used different VSS for the speedo, but not always. You will only need the Dodge VSS if you are using the Dodge cruise control through the Dodge PCM. The Dodge PCM has a tach output. I'm not sure if it is compatible with other than the OEM Dodge tach.

The PCM needs the VSS for O/D to work as well. It has to see at least 32 MPH for it to allow the O/D shift and it turns it off at about 30 MPH. Of course you could eliminate all that with just a switch but that's a PITA to keep turning off and on.
