rusty muffler
today my rusty exhaust line broke at the forward end of my muffler, right at the junction into the muffler. its a diesel 1991.5 4x4 5speed dually flat bed with 75k on it.
first question is how important is the muffler and everything aft of it as far as proper engine performance, can i just remove the muffler and lines without compromising too much? i havent noticed any remarkable change in noise btw, even though the rear 2/3 of my exhaust system is disconnected.
second question: are there aftermarket exhaust parts from any recommended sources? any tips on how to determine if the muffler i have is salvageable?

Diamond Eye is a good and is fairly inexpensive, the parts fit well and do not rattle.
I like my truck to be quiet and only hear the mechanical rattle of the Cummins, but this is just me.
People know me by the sound of my truck, they say it is either a fire truck, or it is Jim.

Back to the topic. Anything that reduces exhaust back pressure helps these things. They ain't motorcycle motors. (It's 2 cycle engines that must have precisely tuned exhaust to function as designed.)

I have DE on all three of my trucks. Both 1st gens have 4" straight piped kits. The RC is slightly modified to fit. My 05 I decided to go with a 5" muffler kit just to keep my wife happy as its only purpose is to tow our camper. Honestly the muffler doesn't tone it down a whole lot. Just takes the drove away.
Like Nittle, I used band clamps at all the joints just incase I wanted to pull it apart one day. They are worth the money!

so let me get this straight...
the muffler and exhaust lines serve the sole purpose of sound dampening and moving fumes to the rear? how about passing inspections in ny state?

Every state is different when it comes to emissions and yearly inspections. I live in WV. We do have yearly inspections, they only care about it not being to loud or rusty when it comes to exhaust. We don't do emissions.
I work in MD. I take the company car to get it taken care of. MD doesn't do yearly inspections at all. Its inspected when purchased and that's it. They have emissions testing every two years and that's a joke. I have taken the company car (2005 Cheby Impala) three times and not once have they checked the exhaust. They simply plug in a handset to the OBDII port, I pay, and they send me on my way. Oddly enough diesels in MD are exempt from emissions testing. The dirtiest running vehicles don't get tested, LOL. MD is truly a joke and its a total money racket! Again its all about what your state requires. Diamond Eye does make kits with mufflers. A mufflers sole purpose is to deaden the noise level. A catalytic convertor sole purpose is to burn the unburnt fuel which in turn cleans the exhaust level.
