All speculation. They haven't proven anything!

It looks like they didn't have enough heat. Probably a cheap 120v flux core mig

That is what I though as well. You can't use a 120V mig, a flux core wire for welding anything thicker then 1/8...and even then I wouldn't use it for anything structural.

I have a little 120V lincoln wire feed, but after moving up to our acreage, and then getting my Case skidsteer I bought a 240V stick welder for working on buckets, and other HD projects, etc.

just need torch in one hand and 120v mig in the other. i've done it, don't ask.

nothing beats the good old stick welder. all we used to have on the farm. my old man's version of "TIG" welding is "gun" in right hand and a second stick in the left. strong welds, not pretty.

gyman, sorry about the topic derail on welding. but what are the plans for suspension on this old girl? guess i should also ask what are the plans or intended use of the truck? wasn't sure if you were making an off-road wheeler out of her or just a fun cruiser. cheers!

Those ground pictures tell the tale, no shielding gas....... Man, that had to be painful to try and do.

I think that's a common mistake. There's a gasless flux-core MIG wire, and a dual-shield flux-core wire that needs a cover gas. That looks to be the latter with no argon/CO2.

No worries, learnt something new, I don't have much experience at all with a mig but have thousands of hours with a stick so it's nice to know what causes that as I'll be brushing up on my mig skills real quick when I get to the cab.

Its going to be a just for fun, cruiser/tow pig. I have Ford parabolic 58" leafs for the the back with air lift bags and 54" Chevy front leaf springs for the front. Pretty basic with cross over steering, rear sway bar and vertical ford Saginaw steering box

Went out last night after the kids were in bed and finished cutting crap off the frame, grinding and cutting.

This morning I started fabbing up the gooseneck hitch, I had a 16" purlin I had saved from a industrial renovation years ago so I hauled that down to the shop and started cutting it to shape. Finished it and the brackets and got one bracket welded on, much better! Had to run up to my neighbours and get a couple pieces of 2.5" square tubing from him to finish the hitch

LOTS of helpful MIG info here. Welding Tips and Tricks - TIG, MIG, Stick and a pantload of other info

That's a purdy 7018 bead you laid down there. You definitely got that process down.

Finished the frame and turnover hitch late last night, needed to have the kids in the shop all day as momma was working so the welding/cutting/grinding needed to be done.

Today my oldest daughter and I got two good coats of paint on the frame

I went through the front and rear diff's and serviced them. After that they got a cleaning and a fresh coat of primer and paint. The frame moved over to the hoist and the diff's and trans crossmember are loosely installed. Also drilled all the 5/8" (4) and 1/2" (12) holes for the hitches. Needed to use gloves to handle my 20v dewalt half way through that!

I'm not sure where the trans mount will end up yet and pretty sure it's going to need some tweaking between switching the motor mounts to move the engine ahead 1.5" and the different length of the NV trans
