Dana 70 question

IMHO, not worth messing around regearing a '71' with oddball stuff for the kind of loads you're hauling. Some people will pay a handy sum for that axle with a usable 3.07 gearset.
I put a 2ndgen Dana 80, hangers, and springs in my truck with nothing more than a grinder and a drill. No driveshaft mods either because the axle is moved back an inch or two (can't even tell). Uses same 1410 U-joint as the D70.
The 2gen D80 uses 9/16" studs. No more coined wheels. Bigger brakes. Easy to find in 3.54 and 4.10 ratio. You can re-gear as tall as 3.31 if you want. 2gen leafs are longer, wider, and ride much nicer.
EDIT: Missed the D250 detail... thought you had a DRW. I find heavy-rated single tires do a dayum good job in most cases. 265/285/295 E rated tires can handle 3415/3750/3970# respectively. I've run 285s on the rear only of my D250 for heavy work.
