16 cm holset
Exhaust turbo housing on my ride is oem, which being a 92 I would assume is a 20 cm unit. Been looking at them for years, and finally pulled the trigger, as I haven't spent any money on the truck in a while. I should have it in a few days.
So the question is ... How difficult has it been for you to remove the (4) 22 year old bolts that hold the unit in place? I assume it will be much easier with the turbo removed first.
Thanks

not to bad, soak em good(penetrant), break em loose before you remove turbo. I have some photos in one of my albums of the process I used. nice upgrade ...

A little PB Blaster on the hot side and my turbo came apart like I had just put it together; even my exhaust manifold bolts came out without any problems.
I was having visions of bolts with snapped off heads.
I would apply PB Blaster and use a tight fitting wrench.
Are any of the bolts rusted?

Nothing is rusted, other than the normal surface exhaust rust. Threads look good on the two top bolts, but since I've never disassembled this part of the truck, I was concerned of getting those bolts out.
The bolts from the turbo to the exhaust housing would be removed first, to provide clearer access to the housing to exh. manifold bolts. 6 point sockets would be used with a breaker bar (if that will fit).
I'm envisioning bolts breaking myself, as for the reason I started the thread.
Thanks guys !

Just start soaking the bolts with a squirt of PB blaster one or twice a day till you do the swap.
I either have a 18CM or the "lag master" 21CM housing on that '92.

You probably won't like this idea, but it was the only way I could get mine separated. Hold the turbo between your feet, exhaust housing down, and beat it with a sledge hammer. Whack it, turn it, whack it, turn it, you get the idea, lol.

two half inch bolts work great for separating housing and it was easier for me to keep it even coming off . but I am by no means an expert , still learning these things myself

While you have it apart, you should replace the bearings and upgrade the compressor. A 60mm compressor and a 16cm housing are a good combination even if you stay with stock injectors. I'm running that with 7X.010 injectors.

Thanks guys,
The new exh housing will be here today. I'll post a few pix once I start working on it.

Like everyone says soak it with your favorite penetrating oil and a few whacks with the plastic hammer and it will pop off , This was the first mod I did to my truck and the difference was incredible

When you rebuilt / upsized the wheel to a 60mm, how did you balance the unit ? Is there a turbo shop near you that offers balancing ?
Rebuilding the unit looks pretty basic, but balancing its assembly is a different story, I would think.
